ok so I was not very happy with my decision to shoot ambient. The good part, over 300 images for parents, the semi-bad part, I regret shooting ambient lol

After viewing them I should have shot strobed for at least a half like I originally planned. Oh well

ISO 2500 1/800th F2.8 on just about all images

4. Some will like it some wont. I like it because it shows the large arena they are playing in.

when shooting indoors ambient my choice of lens are

135mmL
85mm L
85mm 1.8

with my Mark III's.

looking at the exif of the images posted in this thread most close to the FL of the lens above ( here is a link to an uncropped image from the 135L & Mark III from the baseline http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=618500&highlight=basketball ) and I think if you unhappy with your results you got I would think using a combo of the above lens would have helped improve your images.

IMHO the Sigma 70-200 does not have the low light performance of the Canon so if you using a Sigma maybe that is one area that I would look at - YMMV

With looking at the last two images, they probably would be outside of your strobed area so if you used your strobes they wouldn't have really help those images.

So, the big question to me is what do the parents (customers) think? If you were able to fire off more keepers and they love them, well, it's something to think about.

Palladium,

I would say 95% of my shooting during bball is done using strobes. So the 70-200 is perfect for that, buuuuuuuut I have always wanted to add a 135 F2 for not only bball but portrait/sportrait work for the sharpness the lens can provide.

beacherz,

The images will be put on a dvd so I will never really know if they would sell. But on average if I were to shoot both sides for one team I would get around 100 true keepers using strobes. With ambient I got 281 keepers with about 90 to 100 being consecutive shots from bursts.

taquito,

thank you very much.

If my kid was in the white jersey in #6 I would buy that shot in a heartbeat. #3 is great too.

Matt,
Why do you question these?
There is plenty of light.
Noise? I don't see it on my screen.
Lower shutter to 1/640 to get ISO 2000?

I like them Sauk.......I think part of your issue with these is that you are too used to shooting with strobes. Any one of those action shots would look great, hanging on the wall !

Matt, I think they turned out nice.

FWIW, I have found that I actually get better results at ISO 3200 than at ISO 2500. The third stops between the main stops (100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, etc) are software created. If the exposer is solid, I think the 3200 stuff cleans up better. Might just be my Mk III but you might give it a shot sometime and see if you get similar results.

Shots look nice Matt. Our local HS playoffs were at a terribly lit community college.
