I know the whole free thing, but I have been thinking of giving away PDA 320x240 images.
They would have a logo type thing on them from my company but they would be free. I know a ton of kids now a days have cell phones and it might be a nice and very cheap way to do something to advertise?
Any thoughts?
Or maybe 31 cents for the service fee type thing.

It's an idea, but why would they want to have your images on their PDA in the first place and how would you keep those images on there phone...there's one thing to consider.
Another thing to consider is, how will you distribute?
Another thing to think about is; why kids? They have no money. I haven't seen any kids staring at their cell phone backgrounds and thinking about them in the way that they would want to go get their picture taken by (random company).

I would hand out such a freebie only to clients who had bought other products, such as senior portraits. In fact, I do hand out low-rez logoed images specifically for social networking and emailing along with the portrait packages.

I think more and more adults are getting tech savoy and more and more are adding images to their phones. especially in the area I shoot.
I like the idea of a previous customer getting it for free. I would love 3 dollars per transaction by my pricing guideline but I would hope that maybe one day that might turn into more than 3 dollars.
Lets be honest you can not take a 320x240 image and print it so that makes me feel better about giving it away for free.

I like the idea. People are constantly fooling around with their ringtones and pics, etc.
Being proactive is a good thing.

Only on orders, maybe...

Great idea, wrong target
You want the parents to use them and show them to friends.
Offer to set the background of the parents phone to their kids picture for them for free.

Why would someone want to put a picture on their pda/phone screen with your logo much less pay for it? I certainly wouldn't.

The power of Facebook is also pretty intense - I'm getting requests from people asking if they can post their photos to Facebook. Same idea - Should I provide a 600px wide watermarked photo for this?

I agree with Mike about offering it as an extra to orders.

Ditto, only if they ordered first.

Pay for it? Not sure what you mean. This thread was about giving it away for FREE.
The logo would be proportionate to the image size.
Anyways had an order last night and with that order the parent "purchased" 3 PDA sized images of his son. I say purchased because you have to purchase the free image in order to download it.

Not a bad idea right there. Maybe post instructions on how to do it.

I liked your idea so much I'm stealing it.:lol:
I set up a download on my Zenfolio account so that people can buy a 320x240 for a $1 to use on PDA's/Smartphones.
I'm not sure how many will actually sell but since it won't cost me anymore to offer it why not give it a try.

i think its a great idea as something that small wont be printable to a good standard to there is no fear there. i would however charge a nominal fee. I charge £1.00. not a lot of money but at least i get something and i find 6 times out of 10 the person comes back to purchase in A4 size print.

Are you kidding? Kids have (and spend) more disposable income than just about any other demographic.

Not many with credit cards for online sales though.

I look at it this way. I was charging 3 dollars for the image. Most will order something else besides a PDA image. In fact I have not had an order just for a PDA on my site.
Since I started to offer digital downloads I would say 99% of my orders have been digital downloads! Small version lol
It costs the same as my 5x7 and it can print up to a 8x10 but it won't look good.

This is a good idea, now that I think about it...I'm going to try this out Though...

Really? How many clients do you get who are teenagers and just want pictures of themselves? They may spend a lot of money...but on photography?

Not the $1000 or more I expect from a senior portrait job.

Sounds like a great idea. Where I work we rely on certain items being produced so they can be supplied at cost to dealers so they can further the product and smaller trinkets (Lanyards, leyrings, hats, etc) being made for shows and supplied to the public for free.
You're on the right track. You're supplying a smaller example of your product and the lifestyle it can sell. Don't restrict yourself to kids though, people of all ages are into personalising their phones or some little part of their lifestyle.
Great idea and it will cost you a little amount of your time to achieve.

Rather than just giving them out at random, why not include PDA images with your logo on them and bundle them in together with other packages you sell?

Interesting idea, but if you do, get an e-mail address to send it to, then use that address to tastefully stay in touch.
