I just received my new laptop which will only be used for photo editing. My older laptop will be used to surf the internet.
This is the first pc I have owned that will not have an internet connection. I am wondering how I get updates for programs such as Lightroom, Photoshop, or Photomatix to my new editing pc.
Can I save the file (update) on the external hard drive using the old pc and move it to the new pc and open / install the update? Sorry if it's a stupid question. Just want to make sure I taking the correct route.
Thanks for any help!
In case anyone is interested, I picked up an HP dv7-1135nr.
I am most likely going to upgrade the RAM from 4 to the maximum 8GB.

you can manually update by downloading files on another computer and transferring them via USB....BUT, it would be a royal PITA, so i suggest hooking up the new laptop to the internet. i understand what you're trying to do, as i have thought about it as well but it's not worth the hassle IMO.

There's a reason why non-internet connected pcs are either on a company intranet regardless or on dailup. Those on dailup could care less about updates, company intranet ones get updates from internal servers. What i would suggest is, if the new comp has a firewire connection, use that to share connection from the laptop to the desktop, allowing you to install anything you need to and then be able to just unplug it.

Figure I update a few times a year total, I don't see how this would be a PITA. I think I will download update(s) to USB jump drive, insert jump drive to new pc, move file, open and install update on new pc. If it takes 30 minutes each update I have no problem with that. I'm used to a laptop that takes 10-15 seconds to load when you apply a setting in Lightroom  Yeah, I can spend two hours to edit a handful of pics with my old pc  Thanks for the input and letting me know I can do it via jump drive / usb

I can see a company having all their pc's connected since it would most likely be important they are all using the same data. My laptop does not have a firewire port :(
Thanks for the input.

yes, moving the files with your flash drives will work.
