I'd like to hear from users of Macs as to what you think of the newish glossy screens. A lot of people claim that the matter is better but there seem to be a number of people out there who like the glossy screens. In particular I am wondering about potential eye strain issues and whether colors are natural and true. Thanks.

No one is going to be able to tell you what you'll like. You need to see the screen's in person. Look at them from angles that you'll likely be viewing them at and in light conditions that are like yours at home/work. In the end it all comes down to personal preference. For me, I use the MBP with glossy screen, PC's with matt and Mac Pro with matt - all my serious work is done on matt.

I've had my macbook pro with glossy screen for a couple of weeks now and have no problems with it. If you sit with your back to a bright window, you may want to adjust the screen up or down to reduce glare, but you really don't notice it. I honestly thought it would be worse than it is.

That's your biggest problem with glossy. Reflections, especially a light source in the screen like a window or a ceiling light.
Like Maxxum says if possible you should see both in person and compare. Its a personal preference only. You can calibrate and use a glossy just as easily as matte.
I can control my light source easily so I have glossy MBP. If I had to really travel and show clients or use outside, I would have matte probably.

Apart from the top of the line 17" MBP you have to have glossy as far as I'm aware, which is really putting me off upgrading, I just have read so much about them being too contrasty for photographers.

Both the matt and glossy screens on the new 17 are the same S-IPS panel so it really is just a matter of preference. I have had a MBP with the glossy screen for about a year now and it has not been an issue at all.

Never thought I would like glossy but I absolutely love it! I'm a convert.

Both my MacBook and iMac are glossy. I love 'em both just the way they are. However, I am not a pro wrt photo editing.

I have a 17" MBP with glossy screen that I use for image editing out in the field. I'd prefer to have gotten a matte screen but it wasn't available. I don't have any issues using the glossy screen as long as I keep the ambient lighting fairly dim to avoid distracting reflections on the screen.
My desktop machine has a 24" matte display, which I greatly prefer for image editing in Aperture and Photoshop.
