Night game taken 70-200 2.8 IS with 1.4 extender (280 mm focal length), 1/400, F4.0, ISO 3200 and auto white balance. Pic was taken through netting.
CC welcome.
Thanks

Not sure what you are looking for with this. The obvious: lots of noise from the high ISO. bit of a green tint, underexposed at least half a stop and motion blur from the slow shutter speed. On the plus side you have the face and lots of folks like the motion blur of the bat. Some levels and hues adjustments and noise reduction will give you a decent print.
Not sure how far away you where but I might have ditched the extender for the extra stop and lived with the crop. Did you have your lens right on the netting?

I would really like to see this image after some PP work.
I'm going to be shooting HS football this year and will be using the 70-200 2.8. Now I know the extender bumps it up to an f4, but I'm curious to see if it's even worth trying.

I personally would say take off the extender, and either lower your ISO, or increase your shutter speed with the extra stop gained. Judging by the angle I am assuming that you were between third and home so your distance from the player isn't to far away. The distance that you lose from removing the extender can easily be regained by cropping in photoshop. Also the color is slightly blue/green which can be corrected fine if shot in raw.
As far as the picture is concerned I would suggest moving to left more if possible so as to get more of the players face in the picture.

I fully agree.

I agree also - where the light is going to be bad, the extender must come off, even with a great lens like the 70-200.......
If you run this image through a noise reduction program like noiseware or NN, that should help with the post-processing of the image, I also agree that this shot has some possibilities, despite blur, to be a nice printed image...

Everyone thank you for the comments. I was looking for confirmation to the comments I made to my wife about the pic. This was the 1st time to use the extender at night and was testing the waters to see if it was violable solution to get more reach across the diamond.
I’m trying to stimulate the economy by getting the approval for a 300 2.8.
Yes, the netting was touching the lens hood.
Thanks

Well good luck on your attempt to "help the economy."

Why thank you. :) My mom gave me a key chain with that verse on it when I received my Eagle Scout. Since then it is definitely one of my favorite verses.
I fully agree.
I must say that I feel so much better to have gone from the point of asking questions all the time to being able to offer advice that people agree with. Definitely made my day. Now to go do homework...

Yeah to all comments...getting a 300f/2.8 IS WILL make a much better shot. Better reach and optics.

Let us know how that goes! Having rented a 300 2.8 and gotten some of my sharpest, bokkeh-est, bestest sports shots ever, I am jonesing for my own copy in a bad way. I just can't seem to work up the courage to broach the subject with Mrs. Xn2b8r. I guess I'm afraid of having to give up the dream.
