View Full Version : Insurance for my Rebel?

The store I bought my camera from offers a 1yr warranty at $150.00 and it covers anything from what they said. Including if i drop it, kick it, sling it, run over it and etc. It can be renewed and is cheaper if you buy more years in advance.
Now I don't plan on doing those things but accidents happen so I am wondering how many people have ever had serious problems that required buying a new camera or paying more than that to have theirs fixed.
On a side note I have a Mack warranty for 5 years to make sure the camera operates according to the manufacturer's specifications.

My home insurance covers my 20D and all the lenses for everything (including travel/holidays) I didn't have to add it, when I phoned to ask about adding it they said it was automatically covered.
So it's worth finding out if this is the case.

I was also offered an insurance when I bought my DRebel. I went home and my parents checked their home insurance. Turns out it covered my camera, so I didn't need the extra insurance. Do speak to your insurance company.

Be sure to consider the deductable. A $500 deductable on a $900 camera would give only $400 worth of coverage. That may make the extra insurance worth it. I recommend speaking with your agent, as he/she can give you more specifics for what kind of claims you will be covered. Also find out if you are insured for "market value" or replacement.

In store insurance is usually 3 times more then u can get from ur home insurance provider. When I first bought my 300D they offered a 1 year insurance at 125 bucks. I got it under my home insurance for 50 bucks per year.
Well techinically it was automatically covered but the automatic coverage only covers usage at home, so the 50 bucks per year is if it gets damaged outside of the home.

Just one more vote for talking to your agent. When I bought my 300D I talked to my agent. Said the homeowners would cover it for most damages but there'd be the $250 deductible and it wouldn't cover loss. I purchased a "Personal Items" policy that covers that actual replacement cost (not the current value) with 0 deductible and it only costs me $30/year for the camera and the lenses.

homeowners would cover it for most damages but there'd be the $250 deductible and it wouldn't cover loss. Shop around. I got the circuit City warranty for years 2-4 for $90. Will homeowners cover mechanical repairs not caused by damage?

What store is the insurrance with? Bestbuy/futureshop offers extended warrenty/insurrance and they dont always honour it, so I would be a bit weary with them.
Pesky deductibles.
