Great iPhone/iPod Touch idea!

Last night I was listening to a podcast and one of the photographers had a great idea. They have a PDF version of the camera manual on their Iphone. The I phone/Ipod touch does not read files on its own. And the app he suggested was 4.99. I did some looking in the app store, and "FileAid" is free till March 17. You need a second program on your computer called "DiskAid". It is free as well but has to be downloaded off the web from www.digidna.com.

I just finished loading the 2 programs. And I downloaded the manual PDF from Canon. and it works great. No problems yet. I will end up with a bunch of manuals on it very soon. The body, the grip, flash units, anything else I can think of.

Now I dont plan on reading them all the time. But if a question ever comes up, or I change something by accident, or whatever, I have the manual with me. The paper version usually gets torn up and destroyed in the bag. So this is a great solution.

This is a good idea. I have a Samsung Instinct which can read PDFs. **goes to canon.com**

Or you can do it the free way and email the pdf file to yourself. The standard mail app on the iPod will read PDF files no problem at all.

Awesome - have downloaded the app, now trying to download the computer side of things - just a note, digidna.com doesn't seem to work while .net does...

"Air sharing" is another good app that does the same function. You don't don't need software on your computer, you access the shared folder on the ipod by going to an IP address in Internet Explorer.

Ummm..... this is a free way.

The Air Share is great! if you have an internet connection. If the file is on the device you never have a problem. Unless the battery dies.... that is a problem any way you do it.

I have the Ipod touch so unless there is wifi, trying to get stuff over the internet just wont happen.

I guess I confused you. I meant that the way you get files sent to the ipod is via Internet Explorer (or whatever browser you use on your desktop computer). The files are then sent to a folder on your ipod where they remain until you decide to delete them.

Because it copies the files across while you have wireless enabled, they're stored on the ipod. When you go out of wireless range, you still have them on the ipod, still perfectly readable.

Then how do you open them on the ipod? The programs I listed really do no more then put its own folder on the ipod. Makes it a drag and drop action. Then the other program on the device looks inside that folder and gives you a list of what is in it. Then allows you to open it for use. Other than programs like that, I have not found a way to access files stored on the ipod. Care to share how it is done?

The ipod touch and i phone dont play WMA or WMV i believe. WMA and WMV are Mircosoft file types. So I would not expect too much support.

Pictures are easy. Here is how I do it.

Create a folder on the desktop (or where ever you want). I named it iPhotos to remember it is the folder for the iPod. On the 'Photos' tab of iTunes tell iTunes that is the folder you want to sync with. That part is done.

Now, I keep copies in this folder NOT ORIGIONALS as when you do not want them on the iPod any more you simply delete the ones you do not want. On the next sync they will be removed from the ipod. You can make new folders in the iPhotos folder if you want. If you do, the folder will be copied onto the ipod as well. So when you open the photos icon on the ipod, you will have the same folders as in the iPhotos folder on your computer. I have not tried to make a 3rd level of folders yet, but am now curious if you can.

A friend of mine has a Nikon (I don't know the model #), and one day we were talking about custom WB. He didn't know how to set the custom WB, so he simply pushed a few buttons on the back of his camera body, and instructions came up on the camera LCD. I wish Canon had something like this; sort of a built in idiot help index.

Oh, one other thing. I will shrink the photos in the iPhotos folder as well. I make them 800 on the long side. This speeds up the sync time as iTunes does not have 200 15mb files to shrink every time. Do an experiment and see how small you can make them and still live with the quality on the device.
