'Twas a waste of money, in my opinion. The only thing that will soften the light from a flash unit is to make the light appear to be coming from a much larger surface area. In other words, bouncing off a white reflector panel, wall, etc., would provide significantly softer lighting.
Save your money and get a flash unit like the 430EX that can be tilted and rotated to bounce the light off a larger surface. In addition, by having the light source further from the lens' axis, you'll have less red-eye when photographing people and animals.
