I just bought one on a whim today from some one on this site. Any ways I was wondering if any body has any thing to say about em. Oh yeah are they out of production now as well? And do you know when they were in production? I've been googleing it but so far no luck. As always your thoughts please.

It was released about 6 years ago. Go to the link below and you should get all the info on it you'll need.

It was the flagship flash of Canon for a while before it got replaced by the 580EX which then later got replaced by the 580EX II.

I got my 550EX about 2 years ago, and it's a fantastic flash.

I bought mine in 2005 for a good price since the 580EXs were already out- no complaints whatsoever. Great flash, has many features that the 580 & 580 II have (like ability to trigger other EX flashes).

Does it work on XXD, 1D and 5D bodies ?

What limitations... better or worse than 430 ?

I have one, it works the same as any other speedlite, there's just two buttons to release the flash head insetad of one. My assistant uses it all day, and I use it as a dumb slave on a light stand at wedding receptions, with a CP-E4 battery pack (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/498738-REG/Canon_1947B001_Compact_Battery_Pack_CP_E4.html/BI/2312/KBID/3114) to improve the cycle time.

I'm no expert, but I think it works on all bodies that have E-TTL. No limitations and it's a higher model than the 430. FWIW.

430ex is newer, 550ex is more powerful. Which would be better is personal choice, really. If you need master functions then you need a 5xx series, of course.
