View Full Version : Dance Team Shoot Suggestions

I have a Dance Team shoot this saturday (first attempt). I attended a practice last night to familiarize myself with the routine and determine the critical moments to get images. Challenges as expected are A)lighting - no flash allowed and B) composure. I rented a 135L 2.0 which does a good job grabbing individual shots but it is too tight to get group shots of the entire team. These girls just keep moving around. I own a 24-70l that worked sort of well (really like the extra stop from the 135L) but at 2.8 I'm pretty much stuck to 1/125 - 250 shutter speed which creates some motion blur at ISO 800. I'd prefer not to go to 1600 if possible. I've got a 5D and an XSI, so my focal distances are different due to the crop factor. At this point, my game plan is to put the XSI in the stands with a 50 1.4 and a novice shooter in P to just get as much entire team shots possible and I'll just have to stick with the 24-70 at ISO 800 at floor central. I also can't move once the routine starts so I'm stuck to the floor. If anyone has shot these in the past and could provide suggestions, I would greatly appreciate. Thanks in advance for any pointers.

I am not getting it. You have 5d and you don't want to go above ISO800, why? Particularly when you need to shoot action in low light. Why not ISO1600 or even ISO3200 if you need to get the ss to avoid blur.

Starbucker,

I think you're going to have to bump that iso up a bit. I don't see any way around it. No flash + lots of motion means you're going to need a higher shutter speed than what you're getting now!
