First attempt at night shoot

Braved the cold tonight to try and get some night shots, didn't think they turned out too badly. Is really frustrating sometimes as when you want cars to drive by there's none and when you don't want any they insist on parking right in front of you!!

Let me know what you guys and gals think, like i say it's my first attempt so any tips will be greatfully recieved, both pre and post photo taking!!

not bad for a first attempt. but you need to pick out a better subject to shoot

What else at night might be interesting? Have been looking around for ideas but couldn't find anything and thought the old lamps looked quite good.

When i was taking the shots i had the camera on manual, set the aperture i wanted and then played around with the exposure time until i got an ok looking exposure, is that the correct way to do it?

The meter readings were way off, due to the lighting i suppose, and the histogram looked a bit crazy, all over to the left i believe.

Any tips, or is it just something you learn and will be able to look at a scene and say "i need f8 and 4 sec exposure"?

The last one is my favourite.

You could always go for some 'light trails' with the cars etc, I alwways find those fun.

Perhaps will try some different angles next time then, like lower looking up or something do you mean?

Have been reading loads about composition lately and that is something i seem to struggle with, so i was trying to get the rule of thirds and leading lines thing down.

Strangely the best night shots aren't really at night, they are at the point when its just gotten dark and there is still a tad of detail in the sky, which would've made 2 and 3 a bit more interesting.

Thanks, that's good advice, i considered removing everything else from the bridge images apart from the bridge, but that would make it worse i suppose, even less interest. Will have to get out there just as it's getting dark next time

Yep, i think one of the exposures was 13 sec, they're not that soft that you think i hand held that are they! :)

I do think the first ones portray a strong sense of isolation and I like this. It gives the pictures atmosphere.
