haven't been out shooting too much so when a friend dropped nelly off to play for a few hours we spent the time wisely. she is wonderful to shoot with and i will be doing a more formal shoot in the future. here are a couple from late afternoon in the apartment, terrible lighting so i used my ISO1600 shooting skills to get these all ambient lit...

I really like the first one but it might be even nice if you turned into a landscape Shot and cropped most of the foreground out...
the second one is great...were you using the 50 or the 85?

thanx symes...i like the first one because she sat there for a good hour waiting for her mom and dad to come back, i figured the empty space showed that she was waiting for someone.
that second one is shot with the 28mm actually, wide open at f/1.8.

Great shots, you captured the first one well. It does look like hes waiting for someone, especially by the shoes.
The second one he looks sad, he wants to play... go play with him.

Excellent! Especially like #2!
When I saw your sig, I was hoping you were going to say you used the 28/1.8.
You just completely sold me on that lens! Thanks for posting! :D
Funny thing is that I am also eyeing the 300/4L, which would give us almost the exact same lens kit ;)

no worries...if your looking for a salesman for that lens then im sellin. i was just playing around in the dark apartment and i checked to see what kind of shutters i could get to expose properly at f/1.8 at ISO1600. #2 was at 1/25, here is a 100% crop of that shot with the exif still attached to it...straight conversion from DPP to 16bit .tif in PS with nothing adjusted in camera or processing then converted to 8 bit and srgb for webview...save as was i think level 8 for size reduction.

the auto focus around the eyes was hunting all night so i would just touch the focus until it was where i wanted and manual focused on the eyes myself. im assuming that is more the cameras capabilities keeping in mind i was not even reflecting any light and not using any flash to fill or for focus, the auto focus can really only do so much in near pitch black conditions around the eyes.
i can hardly wait until i have a couple storbes to play around with although the manor of the dog may have been so calm because there was no setup or anything too obtrusive aside from the camera itself and the manly 20Ds shutter.
Funny thing is that I am also eyeing the 300/4L, which would give us almost the exact same lens kit ;)well i have to admit i agree with your decisions ;) you are a smart man. needless to say we shoot similar subjects based on history of our posts that have crossed and are on a reasonable budget in which case we have the ultimate low light/action shooting package you can put together without a pile of red ringed zooms. there really is no substitute for L glass but this 28mm f/1.8 i am as impressed with as my 85mm f/1.8 dare i say. i really like the '3 amigos' as i call them that cover most all the ranges and all at f/1.8. the 135 is my toy and quickly becomming my favorite walk about lens. that 300 is the beginning to my outdoor lens collection and already has had some fun at the hockey rink and in the park on some squirrels. i just need to pick up a 1.4x extender to fully utilise the 300 for footy and baseball here this summer. if you want any sample pics from the 300 just let me know.

Thanks mate. So you think the 28/1.8 is a perfect companion to the 85 and 135 lenses?
Would you say that the 28 is close to being as sharp as the 50/f1.8II?
Btw, if you are ever looking for something even wider for your collection, I do recommend the Tokina 17mm ;)

3oh6,
Thanks, I thought the image seemed appropriate. :)
I will absolutely post some images. I HOPE the lens arrives before the weekend, but I have my doubts. It was shipped this morning, so there is a very slight chance.

Very cute. Unfortunately, Jake is smitten with fixed mixed sheppard that lives down the block. He won't pass her house without dragging me over to see if she's outside. Kids!

see i don't only wb after the fact, i white balance before and during. anytime i can control my white balance by setting a custom white balance and setting exposure with a grey card and reading i do. this was the case that night because we were certainly not trying to rush. this was the result processed more to look as it actually was...

everyone has a different taste and when i processed these that night, they just came out with that warm feel i guess. eye of the beholder if you will.

and not that warm feel it has here in the first post... OK. It comes off as too yellow to me, where I'd expect 'warm' to have a bit more of a red component. On my monitor, I like the "actually was..." pic a lot better. Still, it's your pic = your choice, right? ;-)
