Got a great deal on a 50D today with only 5k on it :) The ISO performance is so much for me to get excited about since i shoot a lot of bands in dark conditions. SO excited!!!! Any suggestions on screen protectors?

Thanks

Never used a screen protector...never will! I wouldn't worry too much about them, the worst I've ever had is a bit of a smudge from a hot face - easy to wipe off with shirt! :D

Get out and shoot picsssssss! :D

I have a semi sticky one on mine. It is slightly sticky, but basically a static sticker over the screen. Comes right off. Almost too easily. The ones I have are trim to fit, so I put it on and ran a razor blade around the edge and made a perfect fit. Ill have to look later for the name on it. It has saved me already. While it would not have been to bad, but without it I would definatley have a light scratch on it.

I love it gripped gives me that 1D feel lol and i do a lot of vertical shooting so it's amazing for that and i'm sure the 3" screen can eat up some more battery so of course that's nice to have. I think i got mine used for my 20D a year ago for like 110 shipped and it's been so worth it.

Screen protector - waste of time. New cover is $15-20 USD. Take care of the one you have, it will last for a long time.

Grip- depends on your needs/wants. I use one and love it, but I do a lot of portrait oriented shots, plus I like the heft. This is really a subjective area...

I bought the grip a few days after I got my 50D and it has never come off aside from a few times to check that there isn't any random garbage stuck between the grip and the camera. I'm honestly considering making a bit of a seal around the area between the grip and camera that I can easily remove if I need to, maybe using a bunch of electric tape or something to that effect. I'm not quite sure yet.

Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a foam type weather seal for windows that has adhesive on one side. Take a string and put it on the base of your grip's perimeter about 3mm in from the edge. Measure the string and measure the length. Using that measurement cut the appropriate amount of weather seal. Lay the weather seal flat on a table and cut the foam to a thickness of ~5mm. remove the adhesive and place on the base of the grip where you had the string. Voila! Weather sealed. (somewhat)

Then it's just a matter of sealing the rest of the camera! Haha. Have you done this or was it just a spur of the moment idea on how to do it?

It is something I have thought of doing myself to keep out moisture and dust. I'll probably be doing exactly what I wrote in the near future and will put out a DIY. Honestly, the 50D has more weather sealing and tighter tolerances than any other XXD body. If you have the BG-E2N, it probably isn't necessary, but I like modding stuff no matter how small.

Well the only spot between the BG-E2N and the 50D itself that worries me is the battery chamber in the camera itself. There doesn't seem to be any sealing between the grip and the body that would seal up the battery chamber. I know the BG-E2N's battery compartments are pretty well closed up, but that still leaves that gap and some of the jacks on the underside of the camera body.

With all this talk, you made me pull mine out to look at it closely. After examining it, I think the biggest gap is actually in the dial that secures it the grip to the body. I used a bright light to look for any gaps and the biggest one by far is the dial; you can clearly see electronics exposed on both sides.

The battery compartment seems to be quite solid, so I'll probably forgo the sealing I proposed as the main 'weak link' is actually the dial. I suppose if you are that worried, you could remove the grip in inclement weather and situations.

I'll have a look at it and see what makes sense. I'm hardly ever in bad weather, so I'm not too concerned. My initial idea involved sealing around the entire grip-body junction, including the dials. Also, I think that this thread hijack has gone on a bit too long. New thread/PM maybe?
