So I made a website, on a suggestion from here to use wordpress since i'm a computer idiot. Was wondering what people think of it. It's got most of the nitty gritty basic information on there, and although yes I know it's just wordpress, it serves its purpose for now.

I am getting a company to design our own, bigger and more customized website.

But for now I'm looking for critique on this one

Mostly just want it to be clear, organized, direct and kind of pretty.

Thoughts?

pretty good and a lot better than most that get linked from here

though the images are loading slow (think that is my net playing up atm though) and there isn't really any galleries to look at yet so not sure how those are going to display

The layout is pretty easily recongnizable as a basic WP template, which may or may not be an issue considering your audience. The flickr feed is a good idea. Navigation is easy and the information is easily accessible...so I'd say the site is doing it's job.

I think an "on site" (not flickr) gallery would be beneficial though.

The galleries are located in the portfolios link..granted not a lot of stuff up on there yet, I should work on adding more tonight.

I'm not sure how to get an embeded flash gallery..or even how to make one, suggestions?

I wouldn't use a flash gallery as flash is horrible

I use javascript on a daily basis being a web programmer and it's quite easy to use overall. Plus you don't require any "additional" addons as browser have native support. Plus every browser is in the process of refining their javascript engines so it will only get faster. Flash is quite nice as it is generally browser independent.

I'd say Javascript is the way to go as there are tons of tutorials and premade scripts that you can use with minimal effort (minimal doesn't mean none in some cases :P ). jQuery is a good example of something you should look into.

FAQ (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=656288)

Some info why Flash is bad.

The main issue I have with your blog/site is doesn't give the user a coherent experience. For example your galleries break your navigation forcing the use to go backwards and forwards let alone have the same theme.

To be frank using a blog to create a commercial site isn't the best solution. You'd be better off using a Content Management System and tying in the various loose ends that way. It would give a far more cohesive, and mroe importantly professional, feel to the site.

Are you going to be adding new content on a daily or weekly basis? If the answer is no then you may want to look at getting a static site set up instead.

I would also look into getting your own domain name and setting up a email address as well using it. This way it looks far more professional.

Thanks for that link. I'm reading into JS as much as I can now ...but on the topic of the getting-a-real-website crit, if you'd read the first post you'd realize I was already doing that and insisted this was a temp. site for now.
