New to Canon. Been a diehard Nikon/Fuji digital shooter. Just got rid of all that stuff in order to get into the Canon line. Lovin' it so far. http://www.zuga.net/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Just wondering what parameter settings all of you use on the 20D. I've heard different things from different people ofcourse, so I was wondering if you found your sweet spot.
One person I talked to uses +1 on all four settings except color tone. Another guy I talked to used -1 on contrast and saturation and +2 on sharpness. Claims the -1 on both settings help the dynamic range a little. The +2 on sharpness surprised me also as I've been told it's not a good idea to sharpen in camera.
So help me out if you would, anyone.

Thanks Scott............truly appreciate it !
Going to start shooting RAW soon, but not quite set up for it. Need a new computer with speed, space, and a DVD burner.

The 20D sharpens way too much on the normal (0) setting.

I shoot RAW, and deal with all the other stuff in post processing.

So what do you set your sharpening at ?

I use Parameter 2 (0,0,0,0) for most JPEG shooting (or RAW+JPEG).

Well. If i am shooting for personal reasons, prints etc... I shoot Exclusively RAW + JpgFine. For workflow reasons I try to get my in-camera jpg quality to the highest level so I don't need to use my .CR2 files. HOWEVER I always keep the .CR2 and use it 100% of the time if the piece will be; an oversize print, highly edited in PS, etc... I do all edits like this in 16bit mode retaining the AdobeRGB profile.
The time that i Exclusively use jpg is when i shoot for wedding companies as a frelance shooter. I don't trust their ability to properly use a RAW file so it is 100% JpgFine. (also I need the CF space for weddings)
At weddings a change my paramaters more than WB.
Shooting people i use Param(1) or Set(1) to keep a more "neutral look" that is more of a safe shot for faces etc
Place settings still life etc i use Set(2) because i like a little more pop
Shots of the church, landscape of the venue, etc I use Set(3) and sometimes Set(2)
Hope that helps

I generally shoot RAW / Parameter 2 ( 0/0/0/0), and use RAW converter / Photoshop for any touch-up / enhancement.
The exception is to keep a setting with -2 Contrast, which in bright / contrasty scenes can hold dynamic range without blowing out the highlights----- Any perceived loss of contrast, as a result, can be "tweaked back" in Photoshop.

I have a Canon EOS 20D,
Just wondering somebody know the Canon have a sofware to monitor the subject during shooting ?
so I can use PC to monitor as a viewfinder , or small external monitor to see/ and adjust the subject before take an images... like when we take a portrait person
Note that the 20D LCD monitor cannot be used as a viewfinder for shooting.
any help i'm appreciate

Duke, your question is naive.
Before the shot, the mirror is down, so there is no light at all getting to the shutter or to the sensor. Therefore, there is nothing for an image preview possible, either directly at the camera or externally at a PC.
Once the mirror is up, then the light gets to the shutter. Once the shutter opens, then the light gets to the sensor and the image is captured.

Parameters only screw up the shot, shoot in RAW and posy process.

I'm still shooting high quality JPG and standard settings. I try and fix up the slight inaccuracies and unsharp mask in photoshop.
I don't have time to shoot view and edit Raw shots at present. Possibly when looking at shooting only a few better quality shots for large prints, I may consider it. But at present, I just shoot hundreds of shots a time, burn to CD, and give to my friends and family, (whoever was the target).

Usually:
I strictly shoot RAW. Then I will edit the images at home with my pc. I have saved so many looser images with Raw.
My parameters that I was using before where.. (let me look, ofcourse I have my 20D at work with me)
Paramter 2 ... 0 for everything.
Recently I switched to Set 1, and customized it to my liking.
Contrast +1
Sharpness 0
Saturation +1 <- may change this to -1 (for people pics)
Color tone 0
End of May I am taking a trip to maryland, for bike week @ myrtle beach. I will be shooting jpg, and watching my Histogram for exposure. I will only shoot selective images in Raw because I am estimating that I will take close to 200 picture.
my Parameter settings will be changed to bump up the Sharpness to +1, contrast to +1, and saturation at 0, color tone either +1 or 0 .. depending on what I like beter.
You basically have to set up your Parameters to what YOU like. It depends on if you are shooting jpeg, and if you want to be bothered with a lot of post editing.
Just play with the settings, and see which you like better.
