I asked for help a bit ago about shooting from the top of a crane. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=647065)
I didn't get any answers but I did get some crane time.
I was on a platform behind the crane cab 106 feet up (small crane).
My 40D was on a monopod with a wireless remote. I brought some rope and on the way up was tying ever thing off so if I dropped something it would not hit the ground.
I shot mostly with the 10-22 and a bit with the 17-55. Almost all are at f/10 for good depth of field.
I was able to extend the camera into the crane cab and get a few operator view shots as well as one or two from the outside of the cab looking in at the operator.

Some of the landscape shots came out very nice but I was a bit disappointed with the straight down shots as I did not get as much of the construction site in the shots as I had anticipated. I was thinking 10mm would be too wide but it turned out to not be wide enough at that distance.
I had more time than I though on the crane as he was working as I was shooting. They lifted two concrete wall forms off while I was up. John, the operator, said I was the first person to ride the crane while it was actually lifting. I think I had about an hour and told my boss I felt bad about getting paid for a day when I had so much fun.
My photos from the crane are in this gallery. (http://gallery.thomasdowdphotography.com/nvc/pac/20090226)
