I've been thinking about putting some money into my photography. I currently have a 400D. I really want maximum versatility and don't mind paying a few people to carry my stuff around. I think that the statement "glass before bodies" really makes sense. I am really interested in landscapes, bird photography, macro photography, portraits and architecture. I have come up with a tentative list:

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM Lens (just inc ase i get a 5D)
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM Lens (just in case i get a 5D and the 16-35 fails)
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens (just in case i need the extra stop over the 24-105 and IS doesn't matter)
Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens (when i don't need the 17 on the 17-85)
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens (higher quality 17-85 that is faster but heavier)
Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Lens (backup)
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens (lightweight 24-105
Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens (maximum flexbility when i don't need 17mm)
Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens (maximum flexibility when i do need 300mm)
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens (in case the F4 is too heavy)
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM Lens (when i am worried about a 70-200 getting stolen)
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM Lens (when i want to be discrete but have some decent reach)
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM Lens (for light weight when i need more than a 55-250)
Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM Lens (when i don't need the 70mm on the short end and need to zoom quickly to 100mm)
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens (when i need a large zoom range for the zoo)
Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens (landscapes on my 400D)
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens (low light and stuff)
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens (when i want something that looks cooler than my 18-55 IS and need more reach with USM)
Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (when i repeatedly need to take pictures of leaves then wide buildings)
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens (when slightly lighter weight is more important than 300mm)
Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens (short macro lens for product shots)
Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 L II USM Lens (higher quality than 10-22 at 14mm)
Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye Lens (cool distortions)
Canon TS-E 17mm f/4 L Tilt-Shift Lens (it looks cool and costs a lot)
Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM Lens (faster than 10-22 at 20mm)
Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L II USM Lens
Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 Lens (f1.4 backup)
Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II Tilt-Shift Lens
Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L Tilt-Shift Lens (just in case the first one is betteR)
Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens
Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 Lens (i like the sound of gears)
Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 L USM Lens
Canon EF 35mm f/2.0 Lens
Canon TS-E 45mm f/2.8 Tilt-Shift Lens
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens (everyone should buy a nifty fifty)
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens (everyone then upgrades to a medium priced fifty because the autofocus sucks on the nifty fifty)
Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens (to get respect from owners of the other two, plus when i need bokeh)
Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Macro Lens (just in case its sharper than the 60mm)
Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x Macro Lens (should help me get some macros)
Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM Lens (when i am not shooting basketball)
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens (when i am shooting basket ball)
Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 Tilt-Shift Lens (just in case)
Canon EF 100mm f/2.0 USM Lens (when i need faster than the macro without macro)
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens (backup macro lens)
Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L USM Lens (need a sharp long portrait lens)
Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 With Soft Focus Lens (soft focus could be cool)
Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 L USM Macro Lens (main macro lens)
Canon EF 200mm f/2.8 L II USM Lens (backup for 70-200s)
Canon EF 200mm f/2.0 L IS USM Lens (ultra low light)
Canon EF 300mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens (lawnmower photography)
Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens (low light lawnmower photography)
Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM Lens (birds in flight)
Canon EF 400mm f/4.0 DO IS USM Lens (low weight birds in flight)
Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens (birds in flight should i ever get fit)
Canon EF 500mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens (backup birding lens)
Canon EF 600mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens (wildlife lens)
Canon EF 800mm f/5.6 L IS USM Lens (i'll mostly use this for birds when i need higher quality than the 600mm with TC)
Canon Extender EF 1.4x II
Canon Extender EF 2x II

I am concerned that this list won't be flexible enough to cover my needs. What do you think?

I am concerned that this list won't be flexible enough to cover my needs. What do you think?

That's a good list. If I were you I would get all of them except the Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 Tilt-Shift Lens, the 400mm 4.0 and the Canon 2X extender. That will give you a nice versatile lens collection to start with and will take care of the majority of your photgraphic needs. You can always add the Tilt-Shift if you need it later.

Let this sink without a stone. Replying is pointless.
