Ok... so on with my question... SO, my husband is a professional computer guy for a living, makes a good living blah blah blah... but for the very fact that he is my husband... :-| I dont believe him & I feel the need to ask hundreds of strangers... yes we are that odd.
HE tried like hell to talk me out of my shiney new laptop that we are to pick up today because it runds Windows Vista Premium (gag to all of that) 64bit he says because of the 64 bit part I'm going to have imcompatability problems with my software... most likely with my Photoshop CS2 maybe with my Lightroom 2...
K... really?

Every peice of software WORKS with vista 64bit, no question about it, BUT the only problem is for old 32bit drivers for hardware, thats all, so unless you have an ancient printer or tablet, you wont have any problems. photoshop cs4 is tuned for 64bit, but i dont see much of a difference on my rig, ive tried both versions(32bit/64bit no duh :3) on my 64bit pc.
Hope that helped, if you have any more questions, fire away.
(OH, some old game installers lock up the computer, just throwing it out there)

I have been using first the 64-bit versions of XP and now Vista ever since they became available and I've had exactly zero compatibility problems with software. I have yet to find an application that wouldn't run. All of the Adobe applications I've tried (and I've tried most of them) run just fine. Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2 run brilliantly on 64-bit Vista. Both are true 64-bit verisons and can address all of the memory on my machine (12GB).
I've also never had a problem with drivers, but I usually use up-to-date hardware and don't have any legacy devices that were already out of date when Clinton was president.

Woooaah 12gb :O....tell me, is it a big improvement when running alot of programs?

It's a very big improvement when I'm, for example, stitching a 25x2 panorama in Photoshop from 21MP images. This normally brings 32-bit Photoshop to its knees and forces it to heavily thrash the scratch disks. Photoshop 64-bit, on the other hand, never gets above around 80% RAM usage and completes the task around 5x faster.

:O! i guess i can afford another 4gb stick! photoshop slows down a tad with 10-12mb images, and im using quadcore dammit! thanks ^.....^

if you ever encounter problems with any program in Vista 64, you can right click on it, go to the compatibility tab and select Win03/XP/Win2K/NT4/98/Me/95 from the menu..

I've installed it and its running just fine, only problem I'm encountering with it thus far is that when I open it, it tells me that I need to reinstall the application & its components because it cannot run Adobe Updater???

Several of the better known imaging software vendors have yet to provide 64 bit support for Photoshop CS4. Canon hasn't released a RAW codec that works under x64 Windows Explorer.
The popular ZoneAlarm Firewall app. doesn't support Vista x64.
Yeah there are alternatives to any of these but the truth is some companies don't seem much in a hurry to provide support.

Your software wont be a problem, if it's not 64bit native it will still run in 32 bit.
However, what you might run into problems is with the 64 itself... does your laptop ship with 64? If not, are you going to do heavy digging around? The reason I say this is because some of the drivers for the sony AW's might not play ball with 64, and you might lose some features (like the function keys etc...)...
Have a look at forum.notebookreview.com and see if people have been successful... there are various offerings of the AW, and it might vary from territory... but that's the only hitch I can see.
But, too be honest, running 64 bit on desktop for retouching, your going to have to really be pushing some heavy imaging to make use of 64 bit. And you'd perhaps be better of doing that on a desktop anyway. The laptop is fine, but i think it's debatable that 64 bit will be the limiting factor... my AW is fast, but it's never going to match my dual quad xeon 8gb... if you get my drift :)

Yes it came with 64 on it. Only problem thus far is my CS2 error when I open it, that it cannot do the adobe updater & that I need to reinstall... I will eventually, for now its fine, LR2 works way better than it did on my desktop... but then again that thing was ancient ... & strange that my laptop screen is bigger than my monitor was.
Anyway, I appreciate everyones help

I had an issue with CS2 not registering with Vista 64. I found a fix for it on the net that went something like this.
1. Right click the CS2 icon and select "Run as Administrator".
2. Click OK.
3. Start CS2.
4. Right click on CS2 and untick "Run as Administrator".
It worked for me on the registry thing, maybe it will work here as well.

I believe so. Apparently the registry has to be updated with the info that registration has taken place. Only running the program as an administrator will allow that.

Well i love vista...well some of it.
Anyway the UAC is kinda like a watchdog, unnecessary for admins (main account) it prevents other users from accessing files without a password/etc etc... but it has its benefits for the administrator too, it sometimes prevents viruses from doing certain actions, like, deleting system 32 :D! lol, anyways if you have a good Anti virus/internet security, id leave it off, tell me if you want to do so, its a quicky.

Ah thats ok then.
Adobe have had problems with their update engine. I prefer to go to their website and do a manual download. It works the same.
If you want to take advantage of the extra memory overhead that 64 gives you then you'll need CS4.
Did yours come with the RGB LED screen?

FYI. all of the ZoneAlarm product line is now VISTA 64 bit compatible.

Truthfully I have no idea how to tell... this is a link to the exact one I got that I picked up from the local Tiger Direct.
