There are times that I don't use my 580II Speedlite for weeks at a time. Is it OK to leave eneloop batteries in it, or should I remove them during this down time?
Thanks.

I've come back to electronic devices after leaving batteries in them for weeks/months and have found that the batteries leaked sometime in the interim and covered the insides of the device with battery acid.
These experiences mean that I don't leave batteries in for extended periods of time. I may be being over-cautious but if I'm not going to be using them for more than a week, out they come.

Dead batteries tend to leak. Charged ones seem to last a long time. Months at a time in some cases.

I take them out after each shoot. As others have mentioned, all batteries leak at some point. If I don't remove them immediately, I will forget that they're in there. I also use rechargeable lithium batteries, so I pop them in the charger right away.

In case you do want to leave the batteries in, at least place your flash in a pretty cool place in your house, such as basement where it's all year cool...
But of course there's a zero chance of ruining your expensive flash unit if you take the batteries out...;)

which of course is a hassle and if you are disciplined enough to store your flash in the basement you probably have the wherewithal to remove the batteries after use :D.

I routinely leave batteries in everything too. I haven't known one leak for years.
