Been shooting at a local venue for about a month now ( assisting a regular photographer there ) , so learning a lot as I go :-)
The owner of the venue last week asked if I could make my shots a bit more "cinematic" - but was unable to fully describe what he meant by that.
So here is one shot which in my mind approaches "cinematic" , thoughts? Any suggestions on what "cinematic" may be in your minds?

I like the shot. Myabe he means some close up shots, different angles. Focus in on the guitarists hands fretting chords or picking, take pics before they play of the guitar resting against the bass drum. Focus in on the singer, close shots. Get to a bookstore, library, and research others work. Find some images that hit you, and try and replicate them. Never easy in a music venue but it provides motivation.

Maybe a blue tint and a little grain, but unless he can be specific...

Thanks guys.
Just literally 10 mins ago had some feedback from the guy , he likes these two shots. I personally DONT ! I hate the "magic hand" and for my taste they are way overprocessed. Everyone has their own taste i guess :-)
Both in my opinion need tidying up , but he couldnt understand why.
Good tip about getting shots of the guitarists hands close up etc will try that next shoot.

You have to expect these types of things. It's always the shot you didn't think was outstanding that gets picked  But seriously, a client will always like a shot that you don't think is technically good. It's just something that happens.

Photoshop a giant lizard and a crowd of screaming Japanese people in somewhere - instant cinema!
To be honest, being told to make your shots more 'cinematic', and not specifying what the meaning is was a waste of time. Sounds to me like he just wanted to try out using the word in a sentence that day.

I've worked for a lot of venue owners. They are usually very skilled at emptying the cash registers and poker machines and ordering the alcoholic beverages...and...yep that's about it. So my first guess at
what would be meant by cinematic would be that he wants the shots to look like cinema posters -- like to reflect some action or emotion that's happening in the venue -- so he can entice more punters to enter, imbibe and refill the cash registers.

Funny, but ultimately quite true. Best line heard from a club owner regarding 'who is the best band' question. His answer was 'the best band is the one that makes the cash register ring longest and loudest.'
true dat.

Good tip about getting shots of the guitarists hands close up etc will try that next shoot. Usually it's better for a right handed guitar guy if you shoot from the left side. They like to see that.
