Canon Tripod Mount Ring B:

I own a D-60 and the 100mm f/2.8 macro lens.

Yesterday, I got the Tripod Mount Ring B (black) at B&H.

I see this comes in two pieces: probably depending on the Canon camera model being used.

The box contained no instructions...was there supposed to be any? Or is it painfully obvious to all of you out there .

I haven't yet tried to mount camera & lens to the ring B...I'm not home now anyway.

At the perennial risk of sounding dumb, what's the drill here?

Anyway...when is that secondary ring adapter used...and not used? And what's the procedure for setting everything up with the D-60/100mm macro?

Many thanks.

Hi Mike, That Tripod Ring B is not camera specific, but instead is "Lens" specific. It is supposed to wrap around a non moving part of the lens barrel, and then is tightened down via the thumb screw that will latch over the other part of the ring. The idea here is to mount the lens to your tripod instead of the camera, and is usually done with larger lenses to take its weight off the camera. Instead, the camera is suspended by the tripod mounted lens. ;)
EDIT I ran across this post while looking for info on the tripod ring B, when I found this post via a Yahoo search. After I posted my reply, I noticed this was apparently posted 12-20-02 ? Mike, I certainly hope you found your answer to this question long before now.

I think that allso fits the 70-200f4L and its cheaper than the w.:D:DI think you're thinking of the Tripod Ring A. So far, I've found the "B" is supposed to fit the 70-200 F/2.8 L series including the IS and non IS versions, as well as others that I cant remember right now.

I consider buying the 100mm f/2.8 macro lens with this tripod mount B.
Can the lens rotate inside the mount or is it fixed?
In other words: Can I rotate my camera from landscape to portrait without changing the tripod head? To me, that would be the only advantage in macro photography, since moving the tripod head moves the subject out of view, and rotating the lens along it axis doesn't.
