I hope you can bear with me on the IIn stuff..

I just really have 3 quickie questions, as the custom functions are a bit different on the IIn then the 30d. I'm aware of the SI file, I just want to ask these questions, so that I understand what I am doing.

On the 30D - I enabled separation of focus and shutter for the back button (CN4- 3 I think it was).

On the IIn, to do that, its FN-4- 01 right?

And the other question is on the AF Point activation FN-17. There is no similar function on the 30d. SI recommends activitating it #1, to enable 7 surrounding points around the main selected focus point (for me which would be the center).

If this is enabled - what are the 7 little points? They are not true focus points, what are they? Assistant focus points? I was interested in how they work and how it is an advantage for sports shooting and why SI would recomend enabling it.

Last, I think I am going to love the AF point illumination feature, and I might set it to bright to keep it as a reminder to myself what I am doing. Setting it to bright - do you find that interfering or not?

Thanks in advance, this should be the only upgrade question (but you never know).....

What happens is that when you are using AI servo, your AF will start with the selected AF point and the AF points surrounding that one will help with tracking. That way, the AF will stay with your subject, even if your selected AF point strays off target.

I find this to be good and bad. If you are tracking a single subject in the open, it can be helpful, but if you are tracking a subject in a cluttered environment, it seems to cause (for me at least) the camera to lock onto things that I don't want it to, often causing some missed focus.

I think I have mine set to the default setting, but I'd have to check.

This is what's great about the 1 series cameras. You can really set them up the way you like them. You can make the camera behave in a way that best suits your shooting style and situation.

Congrats on a great camera! I love my IIN.

Not sure about 1dmk2N but on 1dmk2, it still the same, C Fn 4 to 1 or 3. I prefer 3 as exposure is controlled when shutter gets tripped when I am shooting in Av mode (which is rare now a days).

Regrading #3, I leave mine on bright. That makes it easier to see.
