I had a little play with a G10 yesterday at a computer fair.. I was very impressed with it's handling.. For me it would be a great little camera to have handy when I don't want to take my DSLR kit..
Talk me out of buying one..

There are pros I know who always have it in their kit as a backup. And find that they're getting it out occaisionally to shoot something with it instead of their 1diii

Buy it!
That's exactly why I bought mine. It's really a NICE machine, with lots of capability.
Regards!

I was thinking as a general walk around camera.. I will have to run it by my Minister of Finance.. My wife's ability behind a camera is well,,you know.. I'll use the excuse it's a replacement for her Nikon Coolpix which has served her well..

To get my G10 I offered to get my wife an A2000 IS to replace her older Canon. She took the deal and we're both very happy.
I bought mine to replace an older Fuji E550 as a carry almost every where and to have handy when I don't have or want to take my 30D.

I borrow a friends G10 while my DSLR was away at the doctors. I was very impressed with it! If I had the money I would seriously think about buying one for backup and for the times where you just can't get to with a DSLR

That's what I was thinking.. I shoot a lot of street candids,,the G10 would make a great stealth camera..
Thanks everyone for your ideas..

I just got one a week ago and love it. The G10 is an amazing little camera I don't think you would be disappointed if you got one.

Yes, you're crazy. You should've bought the G10 already! :)
I bought a G10 for use when I don't want to lug around a DSLR and lenses.

Got mine around a week ago also. I have been eyeing it for months and when it popped up on my Goldbox deal I went for it. Very happy with it and no regrets. It is a very capable camera and the size makes it very easy to carry with you.
So in short you are not crazy, or maybe We all are !

I use my G10 as a walkaround when the dslr is not needed. Its great. I try and make myself process all the images in PS instead of LR just to keep my knowledge of PS up to scratch.

G9 an 10 are great cameras...I pack one of them every time I travel....bought the G10 at Circuit City during the collapse....
G9 has been to China, Monument Valley, Canyon De Chelly along with that 5D Mk2...I do like the G9...built like a tank

I noticed that with the G10.. I didn't have a long play with it but it sure felt nice in my hands..

Mine was dropped by a relative (with arthritis) onto a stone floor from about 1m...and it didn't even scratch the paint!

At the risk of being repetitive, I love my G10; it is always in my computer bag (which goes everywhere with me), or in my hand.
I have a couple of 20Ds with many lenses and the G10 does not replace them but rather supplements by being at hand always.
Although I also have owned a SD550 and continue to use is as backup to the backup camera, the G10s RAW capability is important.
One point has not been brought up yet, if you own Canon or 3rd party dedicated flashes, they work with the G10.
The Sigma 500 Super is huge on top of the G, but gives fantastic flash capability to an already great camera, no need to buy another flash just for it.
It is a little slow compared to the 20Ds or other DSLRs and not my idea of a quick action camera (my grandson moves way too fast) but a camera in the hand is worth two in the bag......
PS: Had a G2 for a few years and took thousands of images all over North America and Mexico, the 10 is light years ahead in all ways.

It's a great camera for what it is. Don't expect too much from it speed wise or in low light situations. It's a fantastic landscape camera. I love mine. It travels with me everwhere.
I am on the other side of the fence here. I bought one and put a ton of shots on it-- I carried it with me on my travels through a whirlwind trip across the states--- I was not happy with the noise...... for me a little too much noise in low light -- it was decent but not fantastic-- for $400 I was expecting a little more. I also thought it to be pretty heavy for a little camera.
Now I carry a 1DII and 70-200 2.8 IS--- so when I carry a small camera I expect it to be a little lighter and take photos with a bit less noise. For me anything over 400 with the G10 was a bit noisy.
Also for me-- it was a little hard to hold-- not much to grab onto-- but that could just be my hands.
Sorry to add any negative against the G10 but it really did not work for me.

Noise is deffinately an issue. I really only use mine outside for that reason and its splendid. I agree, if you want decent low light shooting then it may not be for you.
