These are just BEAUTIFUL Lloyd!

I have looked over them several times now and tried to find something wrong with them to critique  it's just not happening!

Except.......in the last shot, to me it gives the feeling of solitude...just the two of them alone in the wilderness, I LOVE it.....then I spotted the roof of some building or so it looks like, down in the left corner. IMO that building subtracts from the initial impact this image had on me.

How's that for nit-picking? lol

Lloyd,

Another "raise the bar a notch higher" Wedding set. These are just beautiful! I really like #1, #2, and #8. And, I agree with Kathy...crop #8 on the left to the edge of the tree and lose the building :)
[Edit] - Took another look...add #7 to my favorites...two young lovers lost in each other as the world moves around them! Love that composition :-)

Inspiring work. You do such an awesome job in displaying the subjects in their environment...something I need practice on. Love 3 and 7. The movement in 7 is cool.

#2 - Love the tones from the natural light, posing is spot on. I probably would have done something similiar.

#4 - Love this one as well, great backdrop.

#7 - Great capture, love how it shows motion except for the couple.

Definately professional and way above your average wedding photos!

Amazing! All of them. #7 is my favorite. Is there a strobe somewhere or was this all available light? And were these all taken the day of the wedding??

haha, yeah I debated over keeping it or not. I'm still not sure yet. The building is what provided all the ambient light for the shot. Otherwise it was pitch black. I couldn't even AF, couldn't even MF through the viewfinder (subjects were all black). I had to focus using the distance scale.

Kathy, Jim, maybe I'll give it a try without the building too. I thought it looked cool but the consensus seems to be no.

Amazing! All of them. #7 is my favorite. Is there a strobe somewhere or was this all available light? And were these all taken the day of the wedding??

Thanks Christy!

Yes, 7 was available light, as well as 2 and 6. And yes, these were all taken on the day of the wedding! I prefer to provide a good mix of available light shots with flashed shots.

3, 5, 7 - really nice!

wow Loyd. damn, they're amazing!

Thanks guys!

Inspiring work. You do such an awesome job in displaying the subjects in their environment...something I need practice on. Love 3 and 7. The movement in 7 is cool.

Thanks Jeff! Yes, I like to keep the environment in context of most shots. I figure, people choose these places because they love them, right? So I try my best to keep the photos in that context.

#2 - Love the tones from the natural light, posing is spot on. I probably would have done something similiar.

#4 - Love this one as well, great backdrop.

#7 - Great capture, love how it shows motion except for the couple.

Thanks Todd! 2 was nice but it was hard to get even light in the shot! I'm not too keen on the shadow running right beside the groom and another more to the left of the frame. It's because the trees were so darn tall!

Thanks Scott! It was surely a fun wedding. Since you like 4, here is a variation on it...

Great set, love the locations. Do you find ever find the 10-22 distorting your couples too much?

No I don't. It definitely isn't easy shooting people with an ultrawide lens, but if you do it properly you can really minimize/eliminate distortion. The best way is to first eliminate any perspective distortion from the image by carefully selecting your composition/angle in relation to the people. If you can minimize the difference in relative distance of the people to the lens, it will usually remove almost all of the distortion. It takes a lot of practice though, and I have still yet to master it.

I don't understand how you used the EF-S 10-22mm lens on a 1Ds mark III full frame camera. How does that work? Same for the 11-16 - what about vignetting on these cameras?

Yes, I want to know this as well! :) I remember asking this in another thread before but never got an answer.

How do you use that 10-22 on a FF camera?

Hahaha, tell them to hold it real still. But seriously, I'm using flash to light up the couple and make them sharp. I'm using the big tree to the left as a flag to control the exposure on the couple to keep blur off of them. It's all about light control.

You can hack the 10-22 to work on any body. Remove the EF-S baffle and replace it with a suitable EF baffle. The 11-16, and other third party 1.6 crop lenses need no modification. They'll mount to any body, but the ultrawides will vignette at the lower focal lengths.

The 10-22 shows no physical vignetting around 15mm on FF, though falloff is definitely present.

The 11-16 can be used on FF all the way down to around 14mm. 13mm if you can live with some slightly black corners, like if you are shooting in a dark place.

I prefer to use 1.6 crop ultrawides because they are the ONLY lenses that provide a serious UWA view (16mm FF equiv) on ALL THREE formats... 1.6, 1.3 and full frame. NO FF lens can do that, not even the huge sigma 12-24.

I guess people really would rather see the building out. Wow, I must be the only one who actually likes the building there. Makes me wonder what other weird tastes I might have that the majority of others don't like... :D

Lloyd, great job as usual. Love the last image you posted. Thanks for continuing to post and give us some good ideas to copy and tweak to our own. I for one, appreciate it.

As to that building, I like it in there as well. Maybe I take comfort from there being some civilization around, I don't know, but I would leave it in. I don't think it detracts from the photo. In fact, it may give the viewer another focal point and make the image more interesting...

I'd be interested to know about the lighting on #4. It is exceptional...I just can't work out how it may have been lit, or whether the clone tool was used so well I can't spot the tell-tale sign...

Again though - amazing!

Yeah, I thought the building gave it a 'cabin in the woods' type of feel, because it actually was a wood cabin looking thing... oh well.

Yes, the flash was absolutely key. You simply cannot do a shot like this without flash. Master flash and it opens up many possibilities.

The light was hidden behind one of the bridge posts to the right of them. It was shot at 200mm and they're still relatively small in the pic... so I was really far away. Thank goodness for pocketwizards.

Ummm... I dunno. Just see a bunch of stuff you like and try to copy it. Any photographer who says they've come up with everything they've done completely on their own is lying. No matter what you do, someone out there has already done it. So copy what you like and tweak it to give it your own edge and style.
