Just wondered if anyone has much experience with insurance for their gear...which to avoid and vice versa. Otherwise I imagine I'll add it to the house and contents...but the fact that it comes out of the house and sometimes to different countries makes that a tad difficult with some insurers.

If you don't require professional cover you will be much better served by adding it on to your house and contents.

If you make any money from your photography you will need professional cover.

I was with AON and they were pretty good - http://www.aon.com.au/small_medium_business/photographers.asp

I have recently shopped around and recently changed my cover to http://www.wscbrokers.com.au/

I got a number of quotes - each offer slightly different features etc so make sure you are across the fine print when making comparisons.

I am currently updating my insurance at the moment for our camera equipment.
We have our household insurance with CGU which can cover various items singlely up to a total of 20% of your overall contents value - covers for all of Australia and NZ.
I have also taken out a cover to replace the 5DMKII which is worldwide. This is additional to any travel insurance which usually doesn't cover enough.
I have found out some travel insurances cover per item (but a lenses is considered part of a camera item and cannot be claimed separately - reasoning been can't use lens without camera. Too bad if lenses are stolen out of bag when not attached to camera!
Very complex I prefer to use an insurance broker who is experienced and is willing to research the fine print. Evidently you can use additional policies to cover shortfalls, but cannot of course claim for the same item twice.
