View Full Version : Bikes are not meant to fly

Another bike meeting today, this time at Croft race circuit. Ian H and I worked together during the day. I got this one which Ian missed because a marshal blocked his view with a flag. I also missed one because at that moment I decided the other side of the track looked more interesting. Ian will no doubt post his shots some time later.

The rider did walk away from this with some bruises and a bit of blood from a minor head wound. It looks pretty scary though. Just as well there was nice grass to bounce on.

No grass is nice to bounce on, when you're traveling at a few dozen miles/hour.

Something more interesting than a flying bike?

Ken that is awesome capture. I run a sportbike website and have very popular crash section. Would it be posible if I can put yours picture on the site...

I'm trying to figure what bike that was... I can see ohlins front forks, so I'm leaning towards a pretty expensive aprilia ( definealy not a jap bike ) .... if so that was costly mistake.

As Ken mentioned my view of the above accident was blocked by the flag marshal but I did manage to catch this later on in the afternoon

It may take a little while to download fully

and here are some other shots from the day

and this shot was the beginning of a big accident but unfortunately I had a short lens on at the time and the actual incident was too far away

No excuse Mal. If the royal family dropped in for a cuppa I'd tell them to wait until the last race was over. :) You missed a good day, a very busy one as Ian will vouch. We had to really rush across the track as there was next to no gaps between races. Think I should put an offer in for that nice house just down from the main road?

Sorry I missed a great day - yes I know which house - you buy it and we could all just park there!!!! Quite like it when it's really busy with no gaps. Again good photos. Laura & I are off to Donnington this Sunday for the Touring Cars - early start & late finish but hopefully some good racing.

By the way did you get your Leon?

Cheers Mal

Great captures Ken and Ian! You should send those to Roadracing World magazine (http://www.roadracingworld.com/contacts/). They would most likely use them on their Crash Page. http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif

Great shots, both of you.

Ken - Did the bike land on the rider or did it fall elsewhere nearby?

Ian - I like that series in the first shot. Looks like the rider did a great job of rolling after he laid the bike down. Also, that last shot appears as though the rear wheel is airborne - heavy braking, perhaps?

The bike missed the rider luckily because at one point it was about 25 feet in the air

The last shot the rear wheel is off the ground because as he came through the s bend he came wide onto the rough and basically he was out of control and eventually crashed into the tyre wall at the next corner but as with all the accidents on Sunday all that was hurt was the riders pride and some damage to machinery

Kind-of thought something was amiss - I've put the back wheel up when braking, but not in a turn (and, on a bicycle, not on a motorcycle that I know of). And, I'd probably be at least ready to clutch - his hand isn't on the clutch lever.

So everyone is up-to-date. I have had an e-mail from Peter, the rider in the pictures, who is absolutely fine. I am sending him prints of the sequence of shots to show him just how lucky he was not to have the bike land on top of him. Surprisingly, the bike did not suffer terminal damage and he will be out there for the next meeting. We make them tough up here in the north of England, people that is.

Great series of shots guys... and glad to hear that the rider (Peter) got up to walk away.
