I've heard that Canon is going to put out a new DSLR this fall. Kind of like the 20d but with 12 megapixels. Does anyone have info on this story?

I agree Richard. I can't imagine Canon replaces a camera (20D) that continues to fly off the shelves.

Yes. Name/hyperlink your source please. We try and avoid baseless rumors here.

I haven't heard about it, but Nikon now has the D2X that has 12 megapixels with about the same size sensor. That is probably more of a threat to sales of the 1DMk2 than to the 20D, but Canon is not likely to sit still and watch Nikon get any advantage. I wouldn't be surprised to see some 12 mp Canon's coming out.

It would likely replace the 1D II since it's the same megapixels as the 20D.

The life cycle of the 20d would need about another year out of it for Canon to benefit the most from development costs.

Oh just some chat going on between some members of a local camera club. I was trying to see if it was a reasonable rumor or hocus.

Oh just some chat going on between some members of a local camera club. I was trying to see if it was a reasonable rumor or hocus. So you trust some random people on Internet more than your local camera club buddies ???

If you follow the forums on Internet for a while, you'll find out that as soon as a new camera is brought out, a few months later there will be speculations about new and improved versions of it. It goes like that all the time. Everything you read on Internet about new cameras is just rumour and gossip. Especially Canon never officially releases info about new cameras in advance.

There are a few moments in the year that new cameras are introduced. Canon often releases cameras in August and in February. In February, there's a big show in the USA (the PMA) at which many manufacturers present their new cameras. The 350D / Digital Rebel XT is an example of this, it was introduced on the PMA last February.

It seems that most Canon DSLRs have a life cycle of about 18 months - a new model is introduced about 18 months after the previous one. If that's also the case with the 20D, we can expect a new version of the 20D in February 2006. My speculations are that the successor to the 20D will be an 11 or 12 megapixel camera with an 1.6x crop factor (it will be compatible with EF-S lenses). That would be a nice camera to upgrade to from my 10D... Ofcourse these are all just guesses and speculations, not based on any insider knowledge from Canon.

I expect the 20d to be replaced at the PMA show in February 2006 too. I am just getting back into photography and bought a 10d so I did not take the huge depreciation drop on the 20d next year. I do not think it would be unreasonable to suspect a 20d replacement in the fall before Christmas. Look at the 20d price. It started at 1499 without the lens and today you can get it for 1369.00 from BH photo. I do not recall the 10d price dropping until the 20d was announced, but this was also the time period I was not messing with photography. I think demand over all has gone down for DSLR in the 20D range because of the cheaper DSLR like the digital Rebel and people waiting for more in order to upgrade from a 10d.

I look for something in between a 1D and a 20D to come out something like they did with the EOS 3. I would not be surprised if it has the 1D metering system and looks like the 1d/1v without the vertical grip. I think the 1.6 factor will be around for a while. I think they will try to push the street price back up on this camera too, kind of like Fuji did with their S3 Pro. I can say if the next camera had a spot meter and the 1D metering system I will be first in line even if it is 2499. I think this will be the demand they will be looking for too. Just my 2 cents and that will not buy you a cup of coffee.

Never believe all that you see - nor half what you hear. :p

The profit margin on cameras is dismal, so they invented a technique called "upgrade"... it works for cars... and Microsoft.... so why not sucker us into believing that our $2000 purchase 9 months ago is now obsolete?

It's a game... and if you get caught up in it's nasty capitalistic tentacles... we will all be using our time to pay off the debt - rather than relaxing taking pictures.

I bought a Canon 300D after using a Nikon FG20 for 20 years.... how cool does that look hanging off your neck...:( .. but it took great pictures.

Let's not forget that the art of photography begins with the creative use of a camera.. not the latest camera's creative use of all your hard earned $$dollars.

As to your original question. It is inevitible that all manufacturers will be bringing out new models with higher megapixels... they pay people to "leak" information ... "early".. so that your wallet can get a head start on emptying it's belly. Don't do it... don't jump... it's not worth it! LOL.

A tongue in cheek poke at the never ending cycle of "latest and greatest" -
nothing personal. ;)

Cousin.

Well, the 1D Mk II is the oldest DSLR in the lineup, so it would not be surprising to see a replacement for it soon.
