Hi all,
I remember a while back on these forums, people were lamenting the fact that Canon's SX1 wasn't available in the US, but was available everywhere else on this planet we call Earth.
I noticed that SX1 will be available April 09.
It looks pretty nice, especially with the larger sensor.
After my photography skills improve, this might be my next step.

I wonder what the pros and cons are of the SX1 vs the G10. They both seem like exceptional cameras for the money, and they both are very portable. That is my one gripe about my 30D and lenses. I can't take them all with me anyway and the camera with one lens and Speedlite is quite large and heavy. I find myself lusting after one of these two lighter do-it-alls. I may cave yet.

Disclaimer (I haven't actually used it)
But, from what I do know I would steer clear.
In my opinion, and I don't mean this to insult anyone, it's a great soccer mom camera.
Big zoom, IS, etc. But if you have "Some" actual photography skills, are considering that size of a camera, and that price range,,, consider buying an entry level DSLR.
You'll have less noise, a larger sensor, and a better lens.
Here's the review,,, They weren't all that excited either... http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonsx1is/page17.asp

Assuming it performs better than an S3 I'd get one. I miss my S3 and I would love something better to replace that whether it be the 1 or 10.and I have an SLR. Two! There are just times.

I don't know about that. I used to have an S5 and it took great pictures. Sure, you would not be able to blow them up like you could photos from a DSLR, but for 4x6's, 8x10's, and the web, it was awesome. The S1 has a CMOS sensor and Digic 4 processor. It should definitely be even better than the S5. And the S1 will shoot RAW to boot. Seems to me to be right up there with the G9 or am I missing something? And oh yeah, I see a LOT of soccer moms with DSLR's these days--as well as every other kind of camera out there.

It's probably way better than the G9,,, all I'm saying is it's not portable,,, it's as big as a small DSLR and a DSLR will give you better pictures and more options down the road.
It's just what I would do, to each his own.

no its not what?
have you ever seen an XTi in person? just about the same size as the
Canon S models, only a little heavier. im with CJ on this one, i dont see
the advatages of a camera like the SX1 over an entry level DSLR

The continuous shooting rate is very impressive as is the movie mode but the high ISO noise is not. It has more noise than the SX10, sadly.

the sx1 has usable iso up to 400. iso 800 you run into pretty severe noise.
I would gladly pick this camera over a digital rebel for it's flexibility. i've made several awesome videos/slideshows with the canon s5 and have not regretted it for one bit. Armed with an external flash, the sx1 is definitely much more of a travel camera/general use camera.
some of the most memorable moments are captured on video, not images.

Nope...never saw one. What's a rebel
Seriously, I've owned an XT, bought another, about to buy an XTi and I've owned an S3. I've seen the S5 and SX1. I know the sizes and I'm sorry but a Rebel and 18-200 is no where near the size of the S series cameras. A simple bag test proves that plus, 18-200 is not 20x zoom. The size is not as convenient, the price can be 3x as much for the rebel + lens pending how you get one, and ISO usable levels are roughly the same, once again pending the Rebel you get.
As it maybe suggested to newbies in the camera world, a T1i + 18-200 is A pretty $1400 +/- (sticking with Canon as most first timers do). An SX1 is less than half that ($599), SX10 almost 1/3 ($464) of that, and a S5 ($269) is almost 1/5!
Aside from the size being different check those prices. Nice! There's a reason why everyone says convenient. You're statements are that a Rebel is better. No doubt, conveiently though it still isn't. Plus, I can take an SX10 in The House of Blues and shoot all night with it with a 430 or 580 on it. I cannot do that with a Rebel.

Are you wanting to make snap shots for email and the web or are you wanting to be a photographer that can produce art quality prints?
Figure out your desires and you'll figure out what camera you want...

That says it all, doing photography and taking pictures is not the same thing.
I sold all my big gear and got a G9 and a LX3. Composition and style still is there, I like those cameras, but some how I find my self wondering if I did the right thing, My picture doesn't have the same punch any more, I find my self thinking that it is good enought for what I do with them...But still not the same thing...:(

Thanks for the replies and feedback on the camera....
I wasn't quite sure where this camera fit in the lineup range of P&S versus DSLRs.
I'm still very happy with my G10, and most of all, the portability of the camera.

I've got a 350D but I have also got (just broken) an IXUS 800 IS. I like having both, the 350D for when I want to concentrate on taking photographs, and the small one for when I am doing other things like being a soccer mom etc. Which do you think is the best small camera for things like that?

A g7-g10 would probably work fine,,, anything bigger and you might as well bring the 350d.
