with the Bees and the Vagabond. It did a great job and allowed me to use the modeling lights some for a little help in set up. Hope you like this shot. I am pretty well pleased with it.

Very nice! That makes me happy. I have my AB system coming this Thursday. In spite of the gorgeous female, that's one awesome looking Porsche! Wow!

She is an awesome female. Beautiful, sweet, smart. She has the whole package. And a boyfriend who matches!

The car is the Carrera GT. It is really amazing. I decided not to even sit in it. No reason to start that whole thing.

Could you tell us beginers how you set your lights? I'm trying to figure out how far from the subject to set my key and fill lights. What ratios?

Yea I'm with RFM, I'm fixing to order the AB's and this makes me happy also. Great work Charles

As for the car, I think the base price on it is what, $425K last time I checked.

And I'm sure the beautiful, equally exotic lady would be much, much more than that.

But with the car you can get lady's like that all day long to model for you :)

Sticker on this one with no markup was $448,000.00. Just a tad outside my budget!!

This particular set up was quite challenging. Ambient light from overhead fluorescents, quartz halogen spots and wall sconces and ambient sunlight streaming in from two sides via giant plate glass windows. Whoooowwwweeeee. I had 3 ABs set up for this. One as main at about 50% and 2 others at about 40% as "fill". Though in this situation you're really not worried about which is main and which is fill as you're just trying to balance all the lights. Thank goodness I had the Vagabond too, or I would not have had a chance. Outlets were few and far between.

It took some trial and error to get everything soft, even and a lack of reflection. I am pretty happy with the result.

Question for you Charles. When doing this at dealerships how do you go about getting permission, etc? I would like to do a few shoots at a dealership.

Excellent, Charles (both of them!) I think I can afford the tax in the GT.
When doing this at dealerships how do you go about getting permission, etc? I'm going to butt in & say that I let the client do it. ;) Maybe you could offer them a print for the owners office wall?

That's a great question. "How do I get my foot in the door?" Well, the answer, as best I can see, is simply to go and ask. I've had great luck with doing that when I have time and an idea. You don't always get a yes but if you make a professional impression and leave a card, you never know what might happen. E.g., their regular ad shooter might be sick or out of the country and they call you to come do a shoot just because they had your card handy and they remember you as a capable (looking) person with a nice portfolio. I've had great referrals in some weird and unexpected places. It's quite cool!

When you go in to talk with them, remember to have a point and to get to it. Also, spell out how they will benefit. If they have no benefit, why should they waste time with you?

I have a friend who started his photo business a couple of years ago. He just went knocking on doors, literally. He did very well. Not because his work was great (it was good) but because he simply went and asked for the job. Amazing how that works.

Beautiful shot charlesu. I love the layout/composition. The vagabond does come in handy quite often.

The car though.. bleh... it's cheap silver... as soon as they make a white one with a red stripe, I'll think about it.. :)

one suggestion - for composition, next time include her feet - it would be a more complete shot.

Is that the price of the woman or the car?

Nice natural lighting BTW.

I'm going to ask if this is the keeper? How many shots did you take to get the lighting the way you wanted? Why did you prefer the back of the car shot and not the front shot (rear treatment and wing is not so pretty on this deutsche dream imho).

My 2c, I don't like the second car on the wall as a background and general showroom setting. I like the model and the lil black dress, but my preference would be for dark sunglasses (cliche, but it is a sportscar shot). Maybe a champagne glass, maybe some wispy CO2 fog, or maybe a whole lot! Is lighting a foggy scene one whole big hassle as I suspect?

OT, when it comes to cars and cameras, nothing touches that IMAX feature from the late 1990's about old Indy racers; Matt Munro singing "On Days Like This..." mingling with supercharged exhaust notes and up-changes over visions of a reminiscint Mario Andretti blasting thru autumn leaves along the backroads in a perfectly rebuilt Indy Racer. ahhhh.

Great shot!

I like this one better because the little black dress seems more 'fitting'. Too bad the feet are not included, though.

Best regards,
Andy
