I took this shot at a friends house.

It didn't exactly turn out as planned but I suppose its alright.

Any recomendations for the next time around?

its a good angle, but the dop is rather unfocused. i'd either center it on something more catchy or just increase it to bring more of the guitar into focus.

Clean the guitar?

Sorry, flip response.....I like trying these things myself. It is an interesting angle but I would play with the light some more.

What had you planned?

What kept you from executing your planned shot?

What are you trying to say with the photo of a guitar? Once you know what you want to say, how to say it might become more obvious.

The background is a little distracting. Try to use a solid background like this......

The shot is decent, but I think it needs to be more angled...its a bit too flat...also I agree with Titus213, shoulda cleaned it before taking the pic...the first thing I saw when looking at the pic was the dust...its distracting ;)

Just as an example of how when we don't know what the artist was trying to communicate all we can do is comment on how WE would have taken the shot... What if the artist was trying to get across the notion that many of us have possessions that just sit around collecting dust--wouldn't cleaning the guitar be counter-productive?

Isn't that why this part of the forum is called "Critique Corner".....If all you have is a picture to look at and you are asked to critique it, of course you are going to comment on how YOU personally would take the shot....now if BEEEsH would have stated what effect he was going for, well then you may have a point....

That IS the point. A critique should help the artist achieve their goal for the photo. A critique should help the artist understand what they did that HELPED get their message across, and what they did that HURT their message.

The background is distracting. Here's some example of guitar shots...

Two words, white balance. Other than that I like the shot, it makes me want to strum across the strings.

i like some of those shots. my favorite is the color one of the person playing the guitar. Only problem is, he is not playing a valid chord. its like that one guitar commercial (estaban) where they promise to teach you to play guitar, yet in the commercial they show a bunch of kids "playing" the guitar, not using real chords. To me (a guitar player) it would have evoked a better response had the palyer been playing a real chord. And to make it even better, have the person play a chord that would match the intended mood of the picture. for this picture an e minor would seem to work. :) otherwise i like the shots and may try to copy a few of them.

just my opinion, but the white balance of his picture worked for me. it almsot gives it a vintage feel or something. not sure if it was intended, but it seems to work. plus i like the angle of composition. a little different than the standard shots you see.

No offense but have you had your eyes checked ingelbert? The white balance is fine. I have never heard a more inacurrate opionion honestly. I know the comment was meant to be helpful but it seems to me that the photographer of the guitar need not consider it..

jmust looked on my accoustic and yeah the fret board isnt white, its yellowy, so his wb might be dead on.

Yellow green cast from the lights. Wasn't trying to be insulting, just constructive. If you can't see that have YOUR eyes checked or your monitor calibrated!

I have to agree with Ingy on the color cast thing. There is definitely a cast, although it does not ruin the shot for me.

Steven M. Anthony

Definately a color cast. Whether it ruins the shot or not (from the artist's pov) depends on what the purpose of the shot was...

I hate to say it but you guys are dead off on the white balance issue. I'm have been playing guitar for over 20 years and have worked and changed ivory bridges as well as graphite bridges. If you will take the time to look at the white dots surrounding the bridge you will see that they are true white. The actuall bridge isnt pure white. I'm not saying that the white balance is perfection but the yellowish cast to the bridge is very true to life on 98% of all guitars I have seen and worked on.. If you look at the bridge or what you call (the fret board) You will see that it's very much off white in your picture!! This would make the white balance very accurate becasuse the white dots are pure white in the picture. Look at your guitar and tell me the honest truth. IS the bridge more yellow then the dots?

.....wait, hold it, hmmmm this is weird. Are we indeed looking at the same guitar? The one at the top? Yamaha Black body. I know the second guitar shot is in perfect balance and I do see white dots on that one but the black guitar is yellow-green and so is the dust and so is all the reflections. I think Steven and John are referring to that one too.

JohnEBongo

I was referring to the first guitar, the black Yamaha, in my observation of white balance.

Well that clears that up!! heheheheh.......I thought you were crazy Englebert!! heheheheheheh........You can see why I made my comments because I thought you where talking about the 2nd shot. I agree 100% about the white balance on the first shot. We are all in agreement that the 2nd shot is good white balance!! heheheh.. This was funny, I thought you guys were crazy.. Sorry, my bad.. You can see why I was standing up for the 2nd shot, I thought that was the one that the white balance was based on.. Now I know!! .........LOL
