Hello All,

I want your opinion on these pictures, I have been messing around with A-DEP setting on my 20D and noticed that one of the pictures show a little purple line around like haloing (spelling?).

[A-DEP mode, Shutter 1/640, Aperture 9, ISO 200, Lens 75-300mm, Focal 155]

I think I had a camera shake when taking this picture. I did use a tripod, but I didn't use a remote shutter. Will camera shake cause this haloing?. What do you think of the focus?

I am not sure if it is camera shake or poor focus. How close were you to the subject? Were you under the low limit of the focusing distance. Also the second pic does not hve any depth of field. If you are using a tripod you should use maximum depth of field (f16 or f22) so all stones are in focus. Try them again. good luck and thanks for remembering the fllen soldiers.

I think it was at f16, and was about 75ft away when I took the picture, but will check later. The second picture is cropped and shown at 100%. But picture 1 and 3 have a good depth of field, so I thought. I am a newbee, but correct me if I am wrong.

I got a question for any body that can answer it. Picture 1, is that considered a narrow Depth of field? if so why? My intention was to hone in on my subject and let the rest be blurred.

my guess for the halo would be that the sun was really bright that day and created a sort of bloom effect. i would try decreasing the iso to 100 or 50 then increasing the exposure in photoshop.

I don't know much about the A-dep setting on the 20D but...even your subject stone does not appear to be in sharp focus. As I understand the A-dep setting on the digitals (different from the A-dep on Rebel film) it will show you what will be in focus. So, given that I don't think your prime subject is in sharp focus, the rest, fore and aft, are even further out of focus. I couldn't find a focus point in the frame. I would not consider an oof shot to have DOF. It's just out of focus. I would have gone with a low f-stop and focused precisely on the stone I wanted, check the preview and go from there. I would also not use f9.0 for narrow DOF. You will have to take the camera out of full auto mode. I also don't understand camera shake at 1/640s and 155 mm hand held much less on a tripod.

It would be great if you could re-shoot the same subject and re-post.
