When I am using the G10 is there some way of knowing what focal length I have the lens zoomed to?

I know there isn't for my G9. All there is is a sideways barchart giving you an approximation of where you are, which for the G9 is between 7.4 and 44.4 mm (G10: 6.1 to 30.5mm).
The exact focal length is in the EXIF of the image.

Like Bob_A, I don't have the G10 but it (probably) inherited its design philosophy from the G9.
For the G9, there are a fixed number of zoom steps -- 14 as I recall. So a touch of the zoom lever always lands on one of those fixed focal lengths. I've not checked but don't think that the focal lengths are evenly separated (perhaps a ratio?).
The maximum aperture changes with focal length and the max aperture for seven G9 focal lengths is given here; http://lightdescription.blogspot.com/2008/12/g9-aperture-variations-with-zoom.html
