Canon's EOS 5D Mark II, with its groundbreaking full-frame HD video capability, was the most highly anticipated camera model to be released this year, and it impressed the judges enough to secure a 2009 Hot One Award in the highly contested Digital SLR, $1,000 to $3,000, category. :D

And why did it win? Video. :p Pfftt....

Key words: $1,000 to $3,000 category.
Not just an awesome camera but a great value. An award justly deserved.

But to call it "Professional Photographers Best Digital SLR" would be too broad a generalization. The 1D and 1Ds models continue to fetch higher prices, for good reason.

That is weird to win for video, but the image quality is amazing. I love mine.

I want that medium format Hasselblad, though. :( It's only $27K!

Though it's always nice to win awards, considering that the only compilation was the Canon 50D it was pretty much a given.

Gotta agree with Curtis on this one. It is the absolute best "bang for the buck" out there.
But...I surely do love the Ds3.

After reading the paragraph a couple of times, I don't necessarily believe the author meant to imply it won just because of its video capabilities.

Canon's EOS 5D Mark II, with its groundbreaking full-frame HD video capability, was the most highly anticipated camera model to be released this year, and it impressed the judges enough to secure Professional Photographer’s 2009 Hot One Award in the highly contested Digital SLR, $1,000 to $3,000, category.

I believe the author was doing nothing more than calling out the video feature as being unique in its class.

If you read the actual award (follow the link), it only says:

anon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon’s update to the popular EOS 5D captured the judges’ hearts in this ultra-competitive category. The EOS 5D Mark II has a 21.1-megapixel, full-frame CMOS sensor with a DIGIC 4 image processor and an ISO range of 100-6400. The camera supports Canon’s Live View shooting and HD video capture (1,920x1,080 pixels), and shoots up to 3.9 frames per second in still-image mode. To go with the full-frame sensor, the EOS 5D Mark II has a new viewfinder that displays 98 percent of the actual frame.

I find that the XSi and the D90 coming in at a tie more interesting. There were lots of sub-1k cameras last year and some of them pretty decent bodies.

I've kicked around the idea of picking up a 5DII, and possibly will at some point, but I still think another 1 series would be a better investment for my work. If I do make the jump, the 5DII would be left for studio use only.

What about the "black dots" issue? I understand that, even with Canon's latest firmware fix, it is still possible to experience this problem...

I'm waiting for the 5D Mk III where, hopefully, this issue is eliminated completely.

How long was the gap period between the 5d and 5d MK II?

36 months. Canon seems to be on a 18 month schedule for crop bodies and a 36 month schedule for full frames. There are a couple of exceptions, but not many.

I can wait for the 5D Mk III. I just bought a 40D and it will hold me in good stead for the next couple of years. The black dots issue is most troubling, even with the firmware fix. As well, I expect Canon to overhaul the much-maligned AF system (http://www.kareldonk.com/karel/2008/09/19/canon-eos-5d-mark-ii-not-all-it-could-have-been/) in the next iteration of this camera.

5D MarkII didn't tempt me to get it, i have 1Ds3 and its strong effect is enough to stop me to look at 5D2.

Now with Hasselblad H3DII, i will never look at 5D2.
How would like to get H3DII-31 kit* for about $17k and 39mp kit* for about $20k?

*kit including a lens HC 2.8/80mm

Seriously? I haven't upgraded my firmware yet, have taken 5k shots and I have yet to see any black dots in a variety of conditions. ANY. Nor have I seen anyone who did complain previously complain after the firmware fix.

it's a bit like photoshop winning the image editing software category every year - no contest;)!

What about the d700? Isn't that in the same category? Or is it more expensive. . .

+1

I like mine too... As stated in 100's of posts here already- you can't overreact to some early reports of issues when a new body comes out... Firmware or (some other action) often corrects the issue quickly, and nobody realizes that while 10 people experienced the issue and reported it in the forum, 1000 didn't experience the issue...

The 5D MK II is an excellent camera and its selling out everywhere.

Personal choice if you decide to wait, but from someone who has the 40d and the 5D MKII I can tell you, you can't compare the two. The 5D MK II really is an amazing camera...

I ordered mine early this morning!

I snapped up one of the kits from B&H during the few minutes this morning that it was in stock! After I ordered, it was once again out of stock within about 30 minutes or so. Great timing is all I have to say. Best of all, I just got the tracking number a few minutes ago.
