I use elements2 to process my images and for what i want it is ideal , what does frustrate me is the lack of control when cropping . Has anyone found a way of custom cropping in elements2
whilst keeping the image the same size ?

When you mean crop, I am assuming that you are taking only part of the image and if this is indeed the case, the image will not be the same size as the original. You are actually throwing away part of the image. In Elements 2.x there are two ways to do this. You can use the crop tool or if you simply want to resize the image and keep everything in it you can do the image size. This is Image-Resize-Image Size. Check out the sticky at the top of the page. It has a very good tutorial done by one of our members on cropping and resizing.

If you mean, to keep the same width-to-height ratio instead of the same size, try this (this is how it works in Photoshop CS, but it will probably be the same in Elements):
Instead of using the Crop tool, use the Rectangular Marquee Tool. In the options bar (just below the menu bar), choose Style: Fixed Aspect Ratio and fill in the width-to-height ratio in the Width and Height boxes (for example, 2 and 3). Now select the area you want to crop - you'll see that the selected area is constrained to have the ratio you entered.
After selecting, choose Image / Crop from the menu to execute the crop.
Edit: I just noticed that you can also use the Crop tool and fill in the size of the crop in pixels and the resolution in the option bar. Doesn't that do what you want?
