HI, i`m looking to change over to canon but am happy with my SB-28 Nikon flash. Can it be used with the canon EOs 20D?

It'll only function in manual mode, and you'll need to check that it has a trigger voltage of 6 volts or less. So you''ll undoubtedly lose whatever you like about it when you try using it on a Canon.

It will be better than the built-in flash in manual mode, but that's about all.
Best regards,
Andy

I know how you feel  . All my film gear is Nikon. Unfortunately the previous poster is correct, Manual only.

Darn it. Ok what good flash should i accompany my new EOS 20D? Something a could perhaps pick up pretty cheapish on ebay that was groundbreaking like 2 years ago. Thanks for everyones help on this.

Canon Speedlite 550EX; They just came out with the 580EX last October, so people may be starting to upgrade. Allows manual and E-TTL II on the 20D, with a GN of 55 (m) at 105 mm f.l.

Cheap is relative, but the 420 EX is a nice flash. However, the 550EX allows a little more control. The 420EX cannot be adjusted like a 550EX can. If you find a money tree, go for the 580EX.
Even cheaper and available on e-bay would be a 380EX, which is also a nice flash, but auto only.

yup, I had 2 sb-24 flashes as well. I sold them though... replaced 'em with 2 550EX flashes :D

I made the switch and have not gotten a Canon flash yet. I've used my Nikon SB-26 in auto mode bounced off the ceiling and with a fill card and it's worked fine with my 20D. Sure TTL would be nice, but I figure I got along fine back in the manual SLR days with a Vivitar 285 flash, so this a little better than that. :-) I'm planning on picking up a 580 when money allows. -Bill

Can you use a nikon flash off camera with a canon?
You can. My cousin was showing me how to at Thanksgiving (his SB-800 with my 20D), with a couple of Pocket Wizards.

I use my sb-28 on my 30D. Manual mode, its fine with me. I bounce it off the ceiling, wall, etc. just fine.

Im looking at the sb-24 for my 20D. I'm gonna use it off camera in manual, that'll work right? If I use pc cords?

Canon 40D with Nikon SB-24. Gaffer tape on the hot shoe connected via PC sync cord.
You know, you can just punch a hole on the tape so that the sync pin of the flash can make contract with the sync terminal on the hotshoe. That way, you won't need to use the PC sync cord. ;)

Wouldn't that screw something up due to voltages?

Wouldn't that screw something up due to voltages?
Nope. The sync voltage is low on the SB-24 just like it is for the hotshoe-mounted Canon flashes.

I didn't know that. Would you happen to know which pin than would be. It beats having the cord up against my cheek.
Edit:it wouldn't happen to be the large one in the center. Just looked at my wireless trigger and it only has one in the center so I'm guessing that's it?
Yup, that's it. :)

You will not be totally limited to manual mode with a SB-28 and a Canon DSLR.
The SB-28 also has a very accurate "traditional auto" mode that will work just fine on almost any camera with a hotshoe, including the Canon DSLR cameras.
All that tape on the hotshoe is totally unnecessary.
Enjoy! Lon
