Got my Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Lens a week ago. This lens has some rave and some mixed reviews out there, but I love it. The subjects tend to pop out in a 3-D effect in a way not seen with any of my Canon lenses. The manual focus with AF confirmation is so much easier than I expected.

As with any other new equipment, I have been too busy to play with it much upon arrival. I prefer to shoot nature and landscape... but I have a few shots that I managed to squeeze in this week.

Zeiss lenses have their own unique qualities. I like how the colours turn out. I do not have ZF lenses but have few adapted contax lenses which are very good specially the 50 1.7.

That butterfly is just crazy sharp. Almost looks like it´s been added in PP. The dark outer edges of the wings contrasting against the background is simply amazing. The bokeh also looks good, as opposed to my CZ Contax/Yashica lenses. As much as I love those lenses, 50mm 1.7 and 28mm 2.8, I´ve never really raved about their bokeh. This 85mm ZE definitely has better bokeh than my older ones. Great picture!

I know, it looks like some Photoshop trick, but believe me: I even can't do it in Photoshop! :) Everything here comes straight from the camera, picture is just cropped. I was lucky that time, because the butterfly was perfectly parallel to the camera's matrix. With paper-thin DOF it's crucial.
So, no dirty software tricks, only a little bit of German magic from Zeiss... :D

And few words about this lens: there is no reason to affraid a manual focusing. Handling and building quality makes focusing a pure pleasure. But aperture control is automatic from the body (ZE version unique feature), so if you work in aperture priority mode, all informations re aperture are transferred to the camera.
When you start to use another lens after Zeiss - the difference in quality is really painful.

Tried one of these today. LOVED IT. Its build and handling is just un-freaking-believable - way better than the 85L. A joy to use, and well priced compared to the 85L. One sample shot in the store, 5D, f2:

Any comments on the purported focus shift?
From The Digital Picture's review, apparently Zeiss is aware of it and it's a design issue with this lens due to the lack of floating elements. But, from what I gather, this is only an issue with using AF confirm, not visually focusing.

The butterfly shots are simply stunning. You, sir, are good at manual focusing. :)

Odd, the reviews have panned the Zeiss ZE lenses released. I figured the wides will be different, so I already ordered a couple to replace Canons "best". Cool to read so many good comments here (I can't see the posts — maybe its Mao's firewall in China...)

I have the Planar 1.4/85 ZE since Dec. 2008. At first it was a little disappointed about the softness in best focus. But I also realized that I use this lens all the time, more than any of my L lenses.

The focus shift is real and it does have to do with the spherical aberration and the fact that there's no floating lens. This lens is basically a vintage lens that has been made to fit on Canon bodies. I am pretty sure that the beautiful bokeh of this lens is related to the spherical aberration. So it looks like you can have a beautiful bokeh or no focus shift, but not both together. I use a Canon 1D Mark III, and the Microfocus adjustment allows to work with the focus confirmation of the Camera. Focusing in Live View is of course absolutely great. Most newer Cameras offer this today.

All in all.... I love it. It's the perfect lens for Portraits.

Are most folks using this lens with the Eg-S screen in a 5DII?

I just ordered this screen and am comtemplating this lens - I'm unsure about the accuracy of the green dot for confirmation so I'm leaning towards renting before buying.

I've seen some of the 3rd party split-prism options but am a little leery of the performance since they are not calibrated per say to the meter w/ the 5DII.

Focus confirmation isn't a good way to verify focus; the screen (especially the Eg-S) is the way to go.

Eg-S screens should work with fine with any lens that's faster than f/2.8 and is required if you want accurate focusing at faster apertures.

I bought a Canon Ec L double split screen for my Zeiss 1.4/85. It's pretty useless. Focus confirmation (only in combination with Micro Focus Adjustment) works much better - almost as good as live view.

I just recieved the Eg-S last week, it's darker but since I don't own any glass slower then f/2.8 for my 5DII it's not a big deal. It appears to MF pretty well with my current L glass.

Wasn't sure if anyone was using a 3rd party split prism option with Zeiss as well?

I'm hoping to try out focus using a good friends ZF glass and an adapter on my 5DII.

I don't think they make a Split Prism for the 5D series cameras (Katz Eye makes Split Prism Matte screens for the Rebel and XXD series Canons). With that said, I believe Split Prisms are good for viewfinders that are small (and details would be hard to see) but with the large 5D viewfinder, the matte screen should work out real well.

I rented the 2.8/25 ZF for my Olympus (50mm equivalent) and that was the "kicker"...

Nearly comparable with the 85LII being a bit better in resolution. The Zeiss also has issues with close focusing (Minimum Focus Distance) which gives it a hazy look. Other than that, I believe it holds true with most of the Zeiss characteristics (Contrasty, lots of micro contrast, zeiss colors, very nice Out of Focus rendition).

The native Zeiss ZE lenses should be able to fit on all of Canon's cameras without the need for an adapter :)

I love this butterfly image. I have just purchased a Contax Carl Zeiss 85mm f1.4 Planar AE Lens F/RTS f/1.4, without knowing if this will fit directly onto my Canon 5D II so I goodled the lens and came across this thread and joined the forum. I can see that it does work with the 5DII and the result is amazing. Can any of you fine gentlemen tell me if I need any special adapter to make this fit or will it just bolt right on? I can't wait to get it as this is my first Zeiss and first non Canon lens. I also own a Canon FD 85mm 1.2 so it will be interesting to compare the results.

scepticswe

The lens will not bolt right on, since it's made to fit Contax/Yashica (C/Y) cameras. You need a C/Y to EOS adapter, which are available from many sources, Ebay for one. There are basically two different types; a basic metal ring that will just enable the lens to physically mount on your camera, or the same metal ring with a little chip attached to it. This chip communicates (one-way) to your camera, "telling" it that a lens is attached. This enables the focus lights/beep to indicate when you have achieved focus. I personally prefer the chipped adapter type, since i shoot with a Rebel and the viewfinder is so darn small. Perhaps the 5D II viewfinder is large enough to focus "unassisted", I don't know. N.B. that the 5D, and other full frame cameras, may encounter mirror clearance issues with adapted lenses. You should try and google 5D and contax/yashica 85 mm to see if anyone has posted anything regarding using these two together. Good luck and welcome to the Illuminati; those of us who have seen the light when using Zeiss glass on Canon bodies.

Hey guys, I joined the club and just received a Planar ZE 85mm. Combined with 5D II & EG-S screen, I'm slowly getting hang of manual focusing. I'm very familiar with manual since the early A1 & FD lens days. However, it had VF type with split circle image.

I figured the AF confirmation would help. However, it was quite a bit off. Luckily for micro adjustment, I had to throw it to +20 to be in the ballpark. That was just handheld, trial and error; more fine tuning required once i have some time. My concern is that it may exceed the +20 adjustment limit.

What is experience on this issue? Is this the norm?

Rain, rain, rain. Although we had a couple days of sun, I didn't get a chance to shoot.

However, I've been playing around with the lens. I just love the sound of metal clink when mounting the hood, and the firm 'click' when it's in position.

Oh, it's been years since I've been so diligent with manual focusing. I noticed that I usually hold my breath. And without the split prism, I nearly passed out.... LOL.

OK, if you insist, here's my test shot from my deck looking out the back, spying on the neighbors. Straight raw conversion.

I've got both of those :D They're just wonderful lenses. I didn't get the Makro Planar, I went with the 50 f/1.4 because I wanted the speed for low light.

It came in yesterday! Woohoo! (Ironically I didn't get to shoot yesterday, but I was chomping at the bit this morning!) I went out to the park today and guess what I found.

Ducks! (+Geese) How appropriate, right?

These are mostly tests to make sure everything was cool with the lens, I'm quite happy with it so far. Interesting thing I noticed though, the images looked seriously washed out on the rear LCD and even over-exposed (despite knowing I had proper exposure) but upon loading them into Lightroom they looked great SOOC. Most of my lenses display pretty decently on the Rear LCD, so I thought this was a little odd, but I won't worry about it.

I was playing with larger apertures and different distances from the subject. I really really like how this lens lets you "Pick out" a subject. I thought that was really cool.

Anyways, here are my tests! All on the 5DmkII

Just picked up this lens the other day and I had mixed feelings.
Build quality was pretty good and the manual focusing ring is the best i've ever felt.
But optically it was pretty soft wide open but thats with the stock focusing screen of my mkII ... Got the eg-s screen on order from canon and i can't wait to slap it on... here are some sample pics for now..

You had used the html code before, I see the links now but if you want to post them so they can be seen on the board you have to use the [ img ] [ /img ] tag directly to the photo.

That's weird. They did change the way the link can be grabbed. I personally have to go to "View All sizes" and grab the link from the physical page holding the size (be it original, large or medium).

With that said, I haven't posted a shot in a week so I'm not sure if newly uploaded shots are like this.

You can they just made it more work.

Technically speaking we were never allowed to hotlink our images to outside websites unless they actively linked back to flickr.

What you do now is click the magnifying glass and then click "View all sizes". Pick which size image you want to post and click its link on top, once it has loaded right click the image and choose "copy image address" or however your chosen web browser words it.

Then finally paste that link into your forum post between the img tags.

Hope that helps.

Yes and that's why I have sold the lens since posting that last shot. I loved the zeiss feel and pop of images but using manual focus on fast moving kids just got top intolerable for me. I think a canon prime will have to do for now. A 70-200 2.8II will hopefully do the job.

I was more referring to the rendering charateristics of the 85/1,4 then the fact its manual focus. Mf isnt for everyone, but for those it is, moving subjects isnt that big of a problem.

First impressions:
-Significant focus shift
-Capable of some truly ugly and some really nice bokeh wide open. Suffers severely from LoCA, but it is significantly reduced by f/2 and almost gone by f/2.8
-Relatively soft wide open, sharp at f/2, very sharp at f/2.8.
-As expected very nice colors and contrast

Well, it happened like this: I was in a camera shop to buy some sensor swabs, and somehow, I'm not sure quite how it happened but I was soon standing outside the camera store with an 85 Planar in my hand... I did not expect an ambush at a local photo shop..

I was sort of saving that lens as a treat for myself for some time in the future when I started growing tired of photography..

Can't Zeiss just copy the optical design of the Canon 85mm f1.2L and package it in a big sexy metal Zeiss barrel? *sigh* Oh yeah... the bulbing rear element probably wouldn't fit into a Nikon or Pentax body.

No, I don't typically use Zeiss glass on my 7D. To get most out of it you really need a full frame camera.

BlueTsunami, Yes, I'm very much enjoying it. And it's still the next-to-last Zeiss lens I'd recommend to anyone (50/1.4 Planar is the last one). The reason is simple, while it is superb at some things, it's not all that great at others. Close ups for instance. Wide open at MFD it's a disaster. But even stopped down it isn't all that fantastic.

garys1's shot would have been for instance far better with the 100 MP. For such use the 84/1.4 isn't much better than a Canon lens. The typical Zeiss micro contrast simply isn't there.
At medium and long distances it can be awesome - even wide open.

And no garys1, it is definitely not as good on crop as it is on FF. If you are using it for macro shots on a crop camera then I'm sorry but you are really using it the wrong way. Sure, you'll still get pictures but it's really a waste of such a lens that excels when used for a completely different type of photography.
