Can you use a battery grip with just one battery (one NB 2LH), and if so does it matter which side of the compartment you put it in?

Yes. If I remember correctly, my friend has a 20D and he would be able to use only one battery. I could be wrong and think other-wise... but yeah..

I do it all the time as well. Side doesn't matter either.

That's correct, i prefer not using the battery grip because it makes the camera even more heavy. The few times i've used it, i've only used one battery.

One more thing- if you do use two batterys, do you have to use the same types, or could you use one genuine Canon , one Sterlingtek?
