emoticon display question

Why is it that in some posts, the smiley's/emoticons display with the post, but in others, they show up as links?

Do I need to change a setting somewhere?

try this. when you are posting a reply or a picture see 'disable smilies ' at the bottom of the post before you 'post' it
see how it is ticked ... is it on or off
whatever way you want it , try it

I went into 'user CP' at the top of the forum page (on the top left ) to see were the instructions there in 'edit options' .
but as far as I can see , what I say above should do it
