Im working on a shoot involving one person in an outdoor setting with several cars for a magazine cover. I've done numerous magazine covers, just done with people. I currently have an alien bee 1600. I am thinking of getting two alien bee 400's to use on either side with the 1600 in the middle. Would this do the job? I dont want the single 1600 to be too center heavy and it not come out right.

Any other suggestions?

I'd like to help you, but this is out my area of expertise.

You'll want to get b800's bro. I think you'll have a hard time matching the b400's with the b1600. Remember, (technically) a b1600 at half power is the same power as a b800 on full.

A little more info would help. What's more important, the people or the cars, or both?
I'd try to find the right light for the cars & then maybe kick more light into the people if it were needed.

OTOH, if they're silver cars, you can do almost anything you want with them. ;)

I agree that you should go with B800 instead of B400, don't think the price between B400 and B800 is that much or huge, so if i were you i definitely will go with B800.

Not really. You can read more on these specs at the PC Buff forums but they are not equal as you describe.

If you went with the White Lightning 1600 it has a switch that makes it equivelent to an AB400, so when you have this switch activated the WL1600 at full power is the same as the AB400 at full power and at 50% it is the same as the AB400 at 50% so it will match the AB400's at whatever power setting you have it on, and you will still have the power of the 1600 when you need it. Very versatile light.

It is a bit more expensive but you also get a better built unit with metal case and mounts, better quality switches etc.

Thats why I said technically. I know it won't be exactly the same but i'm sure you'd be able to get it even.

Why are you talking about White Lighting ? It seems that everyone else means Alien Bees. Switch is also irrelevant.

Yes, we are not talking about the switch on the light head.

Just trying to be helpful to the person who was asking about 1600's but concerned they would have too much power. I offered an alternative unit from the same company, that would serve both purposes in a single unit, this is not allowed?

Sorry but it sounded like " You should have better bought White Lighting instead of your stinky AB 1600. Now you are stuck !" :-)

Not at all, have 3 AB800's myself. Love them!
