My 350d is a week old and am looking for a flash attachment. I know that the 580 is the top of the line but are there any less pricey flashes that would work? Thanks for your help.

The Sigma 500DG super is supposed to be a very good alternative.

i have the 420 and it is pretty nice! if you don't need the extra power of the 580 and won't use it to controll other slaves then 420 a good choice.

580ex will give you the best performance since it has ettl-2, and 1.6 crop compensation.
550ex is the next best thing and you can pick them up on ebay for about$300
420ex is the 3rd best.

This has had very good reviews and is reasonably priced in comparison to Canons.

Sigma EF-500 DG Super EO-ETTL which is E-TTL II compatible can be had for about US$200. Canon's version with a comparable capability (more functions, higher guide number, and better built quality?) costs US$370 (after $20 rebate). Bangs for the bucks or brand loyalty. It's a decision to make.
