So I just received an email from the manager of a professional newspaper which I'm going to work for this summer saying that he'd be interested in using some of my photos in a tourism guide. He said that since there's a plethora of great photos of the island, they don't pay much for the photos they use. The fee is $50 for a cover photo and $10 for an inside photo, plus the glory of having a pro, published photo with credit. I definetly want to accept, but I was wondering:

A) Should I ask for a higher fee?

B) What terms should I mention?

C) How should I give them the photos? (They offered either upload to an FTP; burn to a CD and send; or they look at my site, pick the ones they want, and I email them)

Thanks,
Henry

Just looked at your gallery and I must say you have a lot of talet for your age.

At your point in life I would ask a small amount more, but my main concern would be getting published. That way by the time 18 comes around you will have something to show for when getting work...

Your work is awesome for your age. You have a good eye.

What they're offering isn't a lot but I would grab it if I were you for the publication.

Congrats. :)

#1 - you're lucky they even mention pay as most try to ask for free immediately. Publication is not worth free or bad pricing for your images! So many think it is and can't figure out why.

#2 - papers have set stringer rates (people submitting who are not on staff). You should make sure that's there set rate, and if it is you either accept it or don't usually. Very rarely will they up the price unless it's something you have noone else does - could be the case here. Honestly it's not that uncommon of prices, the local paper is $15 for cover or inside, no difference. One down the road (OK, 3 hours) is $10 same - another is $25, another $50 and so on. Level of the paper determines that and you have to know that all these prices are being slashed lately with newspapers struggling.

#3 - Delivery is usually best in FTP or email. CD's cost money to ship and take longer - 99% of the stuff I do for papers and most outlets is FTP to either there server or mine and they can get it off there.

#4 - Make sure the invoice you include has usage terms, if you say for one time print make sure that's in there! You should get paid for every time the image is used unless it's a buyout and buyouts are not $50 or 10. I put my terms A) on the invoice B) in a txt file on the CD for that 1% time I don't use FTP or C) both.

Thanks Mike. I hadn't yet thought of including an invoice, do you have any good templates for this type of thing?
