For future reference... Has any one used both of these to give me a comparison in quality, or used either and can give me their opinions on the resuts... I ask because my next lens will be a longer one than my 200 f/2.8 but I need to make the right choice... All comments and experiences are welcome...

I don't have an answer for you Kenny, but I look foward to seeing what others have to say.At the cost of L it is not a good idea to make the wrong choice.

At the cost of L it is not a good idea to make the wrong choice. It's not possible to make the wrong choice with L!
Seriously, the 100-400 is a very good lens, although several people have reported problems with it locking up/Err99ing/Err01ing on them when used for closely-spaced single shots (with shutter half-depressed so IS is active).

Had the same dilemma, and following reading various threads on this forum (do a search) have decided to go for the 300mm L IS as I already have the 1.4x TC. Only have to save up the money now.

I asked the zoom vs. prime question a while ago: here are some answers

(although I was comparing with the 400 f/5.6)

I think I might work backwards and get the 1.4X for now and use it with my 200 f/8 while I make my mind up, you never know another lens might come out that may cloud the choice even more...
Thanks to those that replied...
