View Full Version : IR filters (and others) for S1-IS?

As I've stated in other threads, I recently got a S1-IS, and am interested in getting add-on stuff for it. For one thing, I was wondering what kind of filters are worth getting for digital cameras in general (and more specifially the S1IS), but one I'm particularly interested in is an infrared filter. I read a post someone made on another forum that IR on cameras without IR built in (just using an addon IR-filter) doesn't work so well and with the SI-IS you need to set the exposure time to significantly long. Is this true? Also, if one is worth getting, what is a good yet moderately priced 52mm IR filter to get? I've been looking at the Hoya R72....is that one any good?
Also, is the camera supposed to be set at B&W while shooting infrared or what? What would be the difference between shooting IR while the camera is set to B&W and to color?
Thanks.

I use the Hoya R72 and it works just fine for IR photograpy. I set mine to black and white or sepia. Everything comes out purple or violet.
Here are some IR shot of mine with my S1 IS..

I definitely recommend the use of a tripod.

If you want to do it without using a tripod, you can increase the ISO but that will increase the noise in the photo. The other thing I'd recommend is focusing the picture before adding the IR filter. Seems to work out better for me that way. Since it's only one button to remove the hood, it's not big deal.

Yeah that's something I'm interested in knowing as well. How long do exposures generally need to be when you're using IR on a camera like the S1?

They all should have their EXIF data at those links, but let me check.

looks like the range is 4/5 - 6 seconds depending on the subject. The only ones that really needed noise reduction are the ones I had to boost the ISO for. I generally try to leave it at 2.8 - 3.2 so I don't have to deal with excess noise.
Oh, it really depends one the sunlight. Ones taken at noon or while there is bright sun don't seem to require much, but I still recommend a tripod no matter. Set it on a 2 second delay so the camera doesn't move when you press the button. I also have a remote, so sometimes that's easier to use.
