View Full Version : How many shots per camera life?

I have an odd question, possibly.

I recently came over to the SLR world of Digi-Photography from a P&S Sony F-828. I am wondering, how long does the internals of the camera usually last? 8,000 actions? 10,000?

I have owned it for around 2 months and have around 1,300 on it. I don't know if that is usual, too many, or what. I don't want it dying on me, but I hope that by the time it would -- it'll be time for a new body anyhow.

Any opinions?

For the pro bodies (1D, 1Ds, 1D Mark II, 1Ds Mark II), the specifications are between 100,000 and 200,000 shutter actuations before the shutter wears out. For the non-pro Canon DSLRs, there are no official specifications, but you can reasonably expect a 10D or something similar to last 50,000 actuations.

This is not as big a limitation as you might think. You can have Canon replace the shutter for you, which will cost a few hundred dollars, but you don't need to throw your expensive DSLR out with the garbage when the shutter breaks.

My 10D took around 65,000 shots before the shutter packed in and the dreaded error 99 arrived. The shutter has now been replaced (for about 10% of the cost of the camera new) and it is as good as new.

Cheers,

Simon.
