Hi
I am hopefully soon going to be buying a 20d and have being going through the whole "which lens shall I get" dilemma. Although I would love to be able to furnish myself with a clutch of L lenses, in reality they are somewhat out of my price range, certainly at the moment (in passing....what is the collective term for L lenses?? )
Ultimately I'd like to be able to cover from wide angle to a reasonable zoom length, but as I won't be able to afford to do that all at once, I was thinking along the lines of buying the following lenses in the order specified:
1) Tamron 28-75 (instead of 18-55 kit lens)
2) Canon 10-22 (ch-ching!!)
3) zoom - maybe 80-200 or something along those lines
The kind of photography I am generally interested in is landscapes and people, with maybe a little wildlife thrown in for good measure. Does the above line-up sound like a sensible way to go? Any recommendations gratefully received - esp with regard to a decent zoom for number 3!
Thanks very much

Sounds like a good plan for your stated purposes and implied budget. There are other options for the super-wide zoom (Tokina, Sigma and Tamron have (or will have soon) super-wide zooms available) but I won't discourage you from the Canon. For number 3 I strongly encourage you to beg, borrow and save your way to the Canon EF 70-200/4L (approx. $550). Nothing else in it's focal range comes close without spending twice the money.

I started with the 300D, Sigma 18-125, 50/1.8 and 70-200/f4 L. I am now going to sell the Sigma and replace it with the Tamron 28-75/2.8. I found out that I need the faster lens for indoors. You can get the 50/1.8 for $75 & 70-200/f4 L for $550 from B+ H Photovideo. Currently I also have the Sigma 20/1.8 for WA prime, this I may replace with the Tamron 17-35/2.8-4. The Tamron WA zoom is available for $470 at B + H. All the above just depends how wide you want to go.

I have enjoyed my Canon 50MM 1.8 series I lense. It's rated very high in every site I've gone to that rates lenses. It's under $100.00 and makes a good portrait and low light lense. I spent about all I could justify on a 20D and flash, so I can't run out and buy a bunch of L-lenses. I have a few zooms for the EOS system since I also shoot with an A2. Think about some "Prime" lenses. I think they make us better photographers because we have to do a little more of the work in composition rather that just looking and zooming out and in. You can even find the Series I 50MM 1.8 on Ebay. That's the one I would buy if I didn't have the series I already. When you consider cost vs. quality, one of those two lenses are must haves.

The collective noun for L lenses is "mortgage" as in "I own a mortgage of L lenses" The conjecture that it actually is not "mortgage", but instead is "erogenous zone" was started by a disgruntled Nikon shooter.

Thanks everyone for you input....the 1.8 prime does indeed look like a damn good buy for the money and always a useful one to have.
HJMinard> is the 70-200L only $550?? (listen to me...."only"!!) I thought L prices were somewhere nearer the stratosphere than that! Certainly looks like a good buy....and I think that just nicely slotted into position number 3! :-)
Thanks again for the input...I'll let you know as/when/how it all goes...!

 That sounds like a highly appropriate one...! And from that, maybe it could also be "an endowment" of L lenses?? Although maybe that starts down a path we'd be better avoiding...! ;)

The EF 70-200 f/4L is Canon's "honey trap". It's a gorgeous lens and reasonably priced, but it's the first inevitable step to "L"coholism. You have been warned.

And from that, maybe it could also be "an endowment" of L lenses?? No, not quite, it is a "mortgage" of L lenses, unless they are supertelephotos - then it is definitely "an endowment" of superteles. ;)

The collective term is a bancruptcy, as in "a bancruptcy of Ls"
