The S230 is pretty much exclusively a point and shoot camera with VERY few manual features.
The s45 is also very automatic, but it has a lot more growing room and can introduce you to a more advanced stage in your digital camera career
If you want a small, easy to use (and basic) camera, go for the S230. But if you're looking into something a little more complex go for the S40/S30 cameras.

Ritz/Wolf just dropped to $499.95; Amazon, too (but not in stock).
Costco.com bundles second battery, 2 cases for $549.99
B&H, Adorama... the problem is finding it in stock.

I just bought my s30 for $380 shipped..... you may want to save the $120 for additional accessories and go for the s30. (www.bhphotovideo.com; they will e-mail you their best price)

if I had known about this, I may very well have done it. You can buy the s30 on BestBuy.com for $399 shipped (but there is tax, which is very annoying).
