Is this thread for both versions of the non IS? I have been thinking about replacing my 300 for the IS version just for the sake of having a newer lens that can be serviced by Canon although after seeing the price for the 400 2.8 II I am also considering it in a near future.Have any of you compared both lenses ( 300 and 400 non IS, preferably the II version).I have absolutely no complaints about my 300, it is sharp,contrasty and focuses really fast and accurately, but having those extra 100mm is a really tempting idea,and even more now that I moved from APSC to APSH.

I have just officially joined the club! :D I just graduated college today, and for my graduation gift, my old man has ordered the 400 f/2.8 (non-is) via ebay. It will be here in the next week.

Theres only one thing you need to know.

It's heavy. ... Just consider it a lens with a built in sand bag for stability.

I dont care about the weight,it would be on a monopod 100% of the time.What I wanted to know is how good are the optics, specially when compared to the IS one.

Thanks guys, I can not wait to get out and shoot with it. I have an assignment tomorrow night to do some high school baseball (terrible lighting), so this bad boy is going to be pushed to its limits. I look forward on seeing what this beast can do.

After shooting from the dugouts, went and grabbed the 400 to get some shots behind the out field fence, only to get rained out after getting 5 shots from this position. Here is the first shot. Shot with a MkIV with the 1.4 ET II.

Hello All!

I've just come across this forum about the non-IS 400 and inevitably I have some questions I'd like to ask about how good the lens is etc!

I'm currently looking to get either the IS 300 2.8 or the non-IS 400 MkII. So, I have couple of questions about how good the 400 non-IS mkII is - How good is the image quality and how fast is the autofocus?

Now, the plain answers to those questions can probably be found elsewhere in this thread so I would like to make it more specific: I own the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS MkII - a lens that I personally find to be stunning - great contrast, very sharp and very fast focus. So, I'd be very interested to hear any direct comparisons to the AF speed and image quality of the 400 to this lens? I'd also be interested to hear any comparisons in these aspects to the 300 2.8 IS lens (Mk I). I also use a 7D so if anyone has any experience of the lens on this body, again I'm keen to hear about them!

Hi Guys,

Yesterday I had traded my monster for a 400 2.8 IS :(, one of my eyes is crying, the other is laughing.... Luckily now it belongs to one of my friends, it has got a good new home, and will be used a lot. Hopefully the new owner will also post some shots here (otherwise I'll kick his ass :) ).
What to say now, I wish You all the best, good ligts, and amazing captures with this unique lens.

...never wanted to sell this lens, but manadeg to get the IS one for a very-very good price so I had to replace the old monster :). The new owner is one of my friends, he will take care of it, and already very happy with the images he had taken with the L II.

Can't remember what the screw configurations were on the 400 2.8 "non-IS"... Would you consider being a 'tester' for this:

I think they are incompatible. I have the current 800 and version 1 of the 600 IS and the replacement feet will not work for the 400 ver 1. If you know a machinist, you might get something fabricated.

It was brand new,the first owner bought it on december last year in a camera shop in Canada.I checked the shop's website and there is one left brand new in box.Its amazing how they kept this lenses in stock for so long.I honestly won the loterry with this lens becuase I paid even less than the market price for the really beat up ones. AF is really fast and it is even sharper wide open than my previous 300 2.8 non IS.

....you had really won the lottery with it, the owner of that camera shop must be an idiot :), actually the only thing cause I had traded mine for an IS version was that it is no longer supported by canon , especially here in Hungary :), but a new one will last forever :). 400 2.8 L II is an amazing lens, optically there is a very little difference between this and the 2.8 L IS, the IS version is only a little bit sharper wide opened, and because of the new lens barrel desing you can handle it very easily.

....wish you good lights, a lot of amazing shots with this lens, and please take care of it, and buy a Lenscoat to prevent it from scratches :)

...I had used minde with a Wimberley plate, but had pruduced one for my friend's 500 4L IS as he wanted a longer one with arca Swiss type foot, actually at that moment the version II foot for him is under production, and will be ready today. Not so difficult to make one, but you should find the right material for that, not equal what kind of aluminium, are you using for that.

I'm using a Wimberley WH-200 Gimball with it's own clamp, and with a wimberley plate (I had bought it together from a guy, but this monster needs such a Gimbal that's sure..)

Shot my first sporting event with the lens. I was using a video monopod that could support only about 4 lbs which was really crappy, but I just placed my order today for a Manfrotto 681B monopod.

I havent had the chance to shoot any sports with the 400 yet,although I will be shooting a football(soccer) friendly match on August when the Spanish football team comes to Puerto Rico. I honestly cant wait for that to happen.

Hello, this is my first reply in this forum. I have found this forum searching info about the Canon 400mm f/2.8. I have bought one unit (first version) here in Spain for 2.500 euro in very very well condition (external and of course, optically) and it arrives me this week.

I'm going to use it with a 1D Mark IV and also with an Extender 2X III. I have read this post and in conclusion the Mark I is less sharper at wide open than Mark II, is it true? But much less sharper?? Someone can post an original RAW file at f/2,8 and f/5,6 or f/8 (or a 100% crop) and a the same photo with an Extender 2X III. If it's a lot of work to you to upload the results you can send me the original files to my mail and I'll post it here.

Anyone has the service manual of this lens?

I have tested the lens at 2.8 and it's very very sharp if the lens doesn't move anything. I miss a bit the IS even I have tried it in a gimball gh-2 of Benro mount in a Systematic Gitzo tripod.

In a few days i'll put a littel review with examples and origibal raw files in my web www.goyomora.com for people that would like to know something more about this lens. It's an older lens and there is no info in the web.

Does anyone here know of a good reliable rainsleeve for close to or less than $100?Im looking at the Lenscoat Raincoat Large for $69.99( I dont know if it will cover the whole lens/camera, its says up to 21 inches, anyone one knows who long is the camera/lens+hood combination?) and the same Lenscoat Raincoat but the Pro version which fits anything from a 300 2.8 to a 800 5.6 for $99.99.I need something that gives me the freedom of rotating from horizontal to vertical with ease.I have 6 football(soccer) games next week and it is pouring right now and it seems it will continue like this for the next week.

Quick question here... What would a near perfect lens go for right now? The date code is from 95 I think. I have a a photographer I work with who made the Nikon switch about 10 years ago and this lens has been in its case since.

Owners tend to hold on to these lens now because the new ones are over 7 grand :eek:. This in effect means they will base sale price on just how bad they need the new version.

My guess would be between 3 - $4000 for a Mk1 model & up from there.

The beast is great. Its just not made for carrying long distances, as you know. It's like carrying the lens AND sand bags for stabilization. ha

Heck of a deal though, compared to the ridiculous price of $7,000 + for a new "lightweight" 400 f2.8.

I feel like I stole this lens @ $4000! :D .... not a scratch on it!!! Sharp & fast!

Enjoy seeing all of your surfing shots!

Hi there, i found an "external well used" but with "glass is clean and clear" 400/2.8 mkI non IS at 3000usd here in Europe.
And a mkII at 5000usd in better external conditions but traces of use are still visible.
Are they right prices?
I think mkII is overpriced. It should be sold at 3600-3700usd....no?

Prices depend on how bad the buyer of a new version wants it & how bad the buyer of an old version wants it.
The prices you mentioned are close if in good - perfect condition.

^^ hehehe...same here, Mark. Likey your surfing shots as well. By the way, seeing those pics of yours encouraged me to break out the beast from hibernation so I can contribute here.

I seldom use this beast only when there's a big surfing competition just like today when I meetup with fellow POTN surf photogs Airbutchie, T2i4me, skwirnmn and shot the 2012 American ProSurfing Series here in Huntington Beach, Ca. Swell were decent size @ 4-6ft but not consistent but we covered this event from up the pier and down the beach hehehe....

To me 5000usd for the mkII is very overpriced, in the item conditions i saw in the seller photos.

Well then, the seller photos must not show the lens be in good - perfect condition. :rolleyes:

For somebody who doesn't have $11,000 for a new 400 f2.8 II (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/732109-USA/Canon_4412B002_EF_400mm_f_2_8L_IS.html) $4000 for an older model is a great price. The image quality is nothing to sneeze at with any of these models imho.
