There is a guy selling a 400mm 2.8 "version 1" lens, supposedly in very good condition. I'm guessing this is an older version before IS. Price is $1700. What are your thoughts on this lens? I already have a 400 5.6, but would love 2 more stops if it's as good optically as the 5.6.

Thanks!
Darin

Sorry, I meant to post this in the general lens forum.

The Mk1 400/2.8 was the first of the EF (Auto focus) mount ones. It was not regarded as terrific when used wide open, but got better from f4.5 onwards. The copy I had was not bad wide open, but it did suffer a bit from CA. I upgraded to the Mk11 and the difference was very noticeable, with punchier contrast and almost no CA it was a very good lens.
The newest version is the IS one and it is much lighter than the previous mk1 and 11's and focuses a bit quicker. Optically it is pretty similar to the Mk11 and seems to resist flare a bit more. When coupled with a 1.4x the optics really show their pedigree, with next to no quality loss and only the slightest drop in contrast.
If I were you I'd be looking for a mk2 or an IS model, as the Mk1 is really pretty old now and any out there will have done a lot of work and could be getting close to needing a new USM motor, which are getting pretty rare now that they are no longer made.

If you wanted a cheaper way of gaining 2 stops look for a Canon 50D body to replace your 30D, the noise difference between them would be almost there; and it would be a lot lighter to carry

Thanks for the info, that's exactly what I was looking for. I think I am going to pass on this one. I love my 400 5.6! As for upgrading the 30D, good advice, and I was forced into taking it. My 30D and 3 lenses, including 70-200 2.8 IS, were stolen. So with the insurance money I am now an owner of a new 5D2, awesome camera! I guess I need to update my sig.

I see this is supposed to be the lens sample archive. This thread has no lens samples.

My copy of the Canon 400mm L f2.8 is a battle-scarred veteran. Scratches on the front protective element, a chunk bit out of the hood, rim dented. I call it "Bolo" after the Keith Laumer Sci-Fi books on battle tanks.

Here's my sample. Same image, the whole capture, unedited except for JPG conversion and a 100 percent crop. The crop was slightly lightened to bring out the details of the flower stamen, but no USM was applied.

Canon 50D, 400mm L, ISO 200, 36mm Kenko extension tube, tripod, 1/800s @ f5.6.

Hummingbird, Canon 7D, 400mm f2.8 L (version 1) 1/200s @ f2.8. ISO 640.

Good enough for non-is and on a monopod.

Is that so?
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/en/Camera-Sensor/Compare-sensors/(appareil1)/179%7C0/(appareil2)/272%7C0/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Canon/(brand2)/Canon

I have been told from many sources that EOS 40D has the lowest noise level compared to 20D, 30D and 50D..but there is just minor difference.
I have had both, 20D and 40D, even 450D...not much difference @ high iso noise.

But oh man I want that 400mm f/2.8L! Its a beaty of optics!

Damn! Airbutchie. You are doing good. Love the digicammies. They still make the covers for an (I say this, laughingly) obsolete lens?

If yours is obsolete, mine is pre-historic.

By the way, re: moon shot, you must certainly have a good tripod.

^ Thanks advaitin... As long as our glassware can do the job, it's never obsolete or pre-historic... hehheheehheheh... With regards to my "current" tripod, it's a CF unit and could hold alot of weight... The ball-head is another story... It's pushed to its max (~22lbs) when I mount the 400 2.8L to it... A Gimble is something in my sights in the near future... Nonetheless, my current "supporting" unit will do for now...

PS. Love your siggy quote... Classic stuff...

Not that I really want to, but with the price of new lenses that I want going over $10K, I have to choose between my 400mm DO and the 400mm L ver. 1. My back says sell BOLO, the heaviest lens I have and keep the DO.

I have a couple of filters for it, the case, the hood (which has a bite out of it, but nothing that makes it a problem), an optek soft lens cover and a hard lens cover as well as the leather original cover, also a quick release plate on the tripod foot. As stated earlier, there are some visible scratches on the front lens element, but they do not effect the image quality. I've posted photos taken with the lens on this thread. The ones below were with a 1.4X TC II.

The front element is not a factor in the optical elements, rather a protective barrier, similar to most of us putting a UV filter on a lens. In the US, Canon no longer supports the 400mm L version 1, so getting a replacement becomes a problem, usually finding a repair facility that can make its own.

If that one is already replaced, it should be good for a long time, you only have to worry about the focusing motor going out.

Working pros get a lot of damage to front glass because they don't have time to put covers on or always use the hood. Old newspaper lenses often have scratches and dings, usually no effect on image quality.

Darius, the exterior looks good and if those shots were done with that lens, I'm sure it will do fine for you. If there is a fault, it will be the lack of IS, if you are not used to shooting a big telephoto lens.

mk1 will cost 2600 euro

minus for this lens is that:
- 2,8 can be soft ,
- no IS
- don't know how is working with ex 1,4

Need a doctor or some full size samples with and with out extender 1,4 :)

Finally pulled the trigger on this lens. First impression is the weight and size. It's big and heavy. The lens focus amazingly fast and takes a 1.4xII really2x well. Sharing you all my first outing of this beautiful lens on a hazy morning down Huntington Beach.

hi

I got my 400mm big , heavy attached to manfrotto 504 hd working like a dream.
ex 1,4 mk2 is not fitting ex 2.0 mk3 - - 800 mm is quite good on f 8.

Only one question how soft is yours F 2,8 vs F3,2 , I'm not really happy with 2,8 on this lens .

Maybe is a lens maybe is just me expect to much from mk1 version , working with 200f2 lens all time and 200mm + 1,4 ex on 2.8 on this is better than 300mm 2,8 is

After back home I will upload some shots.
Can some one say or shows what is a difference between 2,8 and 3,2 on his lens ??

I see you did a test at f2.8 and 3.2. Did you also see a color shift. The second image had more yellow. Under mixed light, perhaps. I didn't see lack of sharpness, given depth of field, but an increase in contrast. Perhaps more experimentation under one light source?

tell me 'bout it. Not enough time. I'm clearing all my projects at work as I'm plannin' to go back home (PI) this comin' december for a vacation. But before that we'll definitely shoot the Hurley Pro next month. Too bad you didn't made it at the US OPEN. It would have been fun shootin' with a fellow pinoy. I also met a couple of cool POTN'r there as well. Enjoy your new lens brah.

Well Pat we don't want you to get lonely. Just picked this lens up from a fellow POTN'er. It came in Wednesday. Used it for some HS Tennis. When things slow down I'll need to read up on all the settings on this thing.

Sorry about the watermarks on the last three...only place I've uploaded is on my site.

You poor feller. LOL Thanks, have a tennis match to shoot this afternoon then Football tonight and Soccer in the morning. Then I'm off till Monday. I'll try and keep you good company...at least until Football ends. Don't think I'll use this much for Basketball. So it will be stored (unless I get some time to do some birds this winter) until Baseball in the Spring.

Didn't bring the beast though as I didn't know if the swell will be up. I probably had left the house when you post this morning. Text me next time if you want to shoot...that would be awesome.

A bit more seasonal--my two grandgirls in the Nutcracker recently. I shot from the back of the theater and Bolo, the warhorse 400 L, was still too tight for most shots. On tripod, 1DM4, ISO 3200, program mode, pattern metering.

The girls again. I lightened the preceding a little and the blue lighted one below. The much better lit of the younger grandgirl is only reduced from the original.

Principal dancers (not my grandkids) to show how the frame was too tight at times.

Not sure if you guys are interested, but I've just created a Flickr group for the Mk1 and 2 without IS.

There's never going to be a huge amount of members, but at least we'll be catered for. ;-)

^^ Thanks AJG1, just joined in ....

I have also setup a flickr group for this 'exclusive' lens a few months ago...;):D We're the only few people that is fortunate to have a magical glass like this.

Keep 'em coming.

Nice one! - Unfortunately, your group is for MkII owners....mine is MkI, may I still join?

Cheers Patrick. ;)

Mine is also the first version. Supposedly all of us owners of pre IS versions are living (or the lens is living) on borrowed time. That someday the motor will go and there are no replacement parts being built by Canon.

Hi All,

Would like to wish You a Happy New Year!!!! Yesterday the sun had finally appeared for a few hours, so took out my baby for a short test. Had used a 1D Mark IV with 400 2.8 L II + 1.4xIII Tc, the targets were on the other side of the lake, so way too far from me (had to crop them), but I think the shots are still acceptable.

^^ nice pics Peter. It seems the 1.4xII & III has no difference in IQ. Both excel on this glass.

...thanks Patrick :). More than a year ago I had already decided that once one of this besasts will be mine. I bought it in my small country in a perceft condition, and perhaps this is the only copy in Hungary. Telling you the truth, it is very heavy but it worth carrying around :)

...by the way what kind of video or gimball head are you using with this "little monster"???

I only use this lens to shoot surf, soccer etc...but not on wildlife. I use this http://www.amazon.com/BOGEN-681-B-Manfrotto-Monopod-Camera/dp/B00006IS2W as I find the tripod setup a bit restricted as I can't move around places.

here's a shot with a 1.4xII....

...nice shot, as all yours :), have already seen them on flickr..

I have got the same monopod like yours :), bought this lens actually for everything, for wildlife, waterpolo, coursing... but during the disgusting winter months (no snow, but mud everywhere, and everything is grey :( ) the only thing you can do is to shoot wildlife (if you have got enough light)..... waiting for spring months :)

peter

p.s.: how on earth can you attach pictures from flickr to your thread????

patrickf117

just grab the HTML/BB code and choose the size from there... must be nice to shoot wildlife but the closest thing for me is the zoo :(
