Spring Flowers Critique DOF Test

Newbie here. I have been playing around with DOF trying to gain a better understanding. What could I have done to capture the rim of the green/yellow pots? I am thinking I should have used a higher f-stop?

There's bit too much space on top, try cropping just above the background flower, I personally hate cropping, so next time try looking inside the viewfinder and spending some time there before snapping the shot, it'll train your eyes to see :)
