I have found a used Canon 100-300 F5.6L for a decent price I think ($350 Can)
I know this is a Dinosaur lens and is ugly as sin and doesn't have USM, but for $350 and 300mm, is it that bad?
It is an "L"

Many still recommend this lens for those that want something abit sharper than the best x-300 consumer zoom--but who can't afford a 70-300/4L + TC
The incredibly slow focus speed was a compromise choice to be made for getting good optics
Here is an excellent comparison gallery with that and other lenses-

-note that there are large files available!just click on the 'original' size choice

From what I have read and seen, it seems like an OK lens but falls way short on contrast and the colour is not so great. If you want 300mm, look for the 300F4 L; I have one and it is super-sharp. Jeff, if you want to borrow it sometime and see what it can do, just email me and we can work something out!!

Michael,
while I agree with you that the 300/4.0 L is definitely a great lens, a difference in price of roughly US-$ 1,000 is a bit hard to swallow.
Toogy, did you buy the lens?
Used price in Europe in the eBay auctions I followed seems to be around 400-450 EUR (approximately same price in US-$).
Best regards,
Andy

I am totaly agree with you : fixed lens will allways be better face to a zoom
I don't know the price of the 300 L f4 in the used market but, I prefer black finish for a lens, small size and not heavy...
I've sell the 70-200 f2.8L for those reasons...
Exept on ebay, where can I find the 100-300 5.6 L ?
the prices seems to be 300 $...
thanks

My studio partner used one for several years and it made excellent photos. He did a project of B&W portraits enlarged to 16x24 and they were stunning, some of the sharpest photos I have seen from 35mm. I wish I had bought it from him when he upgraded to the 70-200/2.8L

thanks Etaf
I've seen on jessop website but i'm not sure that the 100-300 5.6 they got are surely "L" versions...
by the way, impossible to contact them if you don't have a fax... (no email, or am I blind ?)
thanks

to get the price you do need to contact the local shop to see what price they have and if still in shop - may have sold that day - then they will ship to any store of your choice
